Ardèche

Plant recordings in June 2022

by Rutger Barendse and Jeroen Willemsen

Plant species in the Ardèche

After a two year period without BotanicalJourneys, we were desperate to hit the road again. So in June 2022 we decided to pick up our good habit of making at least one BotanicalJourney each year and drove 1000 kilometers south to visit the Ardèche region in France. Although we were familiar with the existence of this area, we both had never been there before. Unfortunately on our arrival we discovered that it had been hot and dry for quite a long time in the Ardèche, so some of the vegetation had dried out severely. The day temperatures were roughly about 35 degrees Celsius. As you can imagine, this made our plant hunting trips quite challenging. Luckily Rutger had found a holiday home with a private swimming pool, which we used multiple times a day.

Chassagnes Our base camp was located in the village of Chassagnes, in the south of the Ardèche. The old town is strategically located in the vicinity of the Chassezac river, that is nowadays used by tourists in canoes, but was once used by scary enemies. We wonder if they were as clumsy with boats as the tourists are nowadays: sitting alongside the river gives you free theatre all day. The town and the river are located on a limestone plateau, in which the river has carved out a steep ravine with often inaccessible slopes. On the rocky plateau lies the forest of Païolive, that mainly consists of downy oak and holly oak (Quercus pubescens and Quercus ilex).

11 June 2022: Surroundings of Château de Chassagnes  (Google map)

After a nice dive in the swimming pool on our day of arrival, we checked out the surroundings of the nearby Château de Chassagnes during a short walk in the evening. This gave us the opportunity to start a list of plant species with more or less common plant species. We recorded nice things like Anagallis arvensis subsp. foemina, Ononis arvensis, Bituminaria bituminosa, Galium pumilum, Teucrium montanum and Polygala calcarea. On the many walls and rocks we found typical species like Asplenium adiantum-nigrum, Sedum rupestre, Umbilicus rupestris and Asplenium trichomanes. In total we recorded 115 different species during this short walk. The finding of Epipactis muelleri on a construction site right behind our apartment was somewhat surprising for us. By the time bats flew around our heads and we could barely make out Himantoglossum hircinum in the twilight, we realized it was time to go to bed. After another dive in the swimming pool, of course.

12 June 2022: Around Chassagnes  (Google map)

Inula salicina Then we decided to make a walk in the surroundings of Chassagnes, the village where our holiday home was located. We first walked past the castle down to the Chassezac river, recording species like Helminthotheca echioides, Silene italica and Teucrium chamaedrys. Unfortunately there were no footpaths alongside the river, but we reached the shore following a dirt track through some fields. In this fields we recorded species like Dianthus armeria, Jasione montana, Biscutella laevigata and Salvia pratensis. In the river we found Myriophyllum spicatum. On the rocks near a recreative area in  the Chassezac river we recorded Campanula medium and Asplenium ceterach. From the river a steep path went up the hill, going into the  Païolive forest. Quercus pubescens and Quercus ilex were the dominant tree species here. We recorded Smilax aspera and Buglossoides purpurocaerulea underneath the trees. At some points the rocky area was more open. Here we recorded species like Allium sphaerocephalon, Teucrium flavum, Phleum phleoides, Inula spiraeifolia (see picture) and Galium parisiense. After we passed the chapel of Saint Eugène, the road took us back to the village of Chassagnes again. With that we ended a hot walk. So you can probably imagine what we did when we got back to our holiday home…

Hemerocallis fulva In the evening the temperatures dropped slightly, so we made another short walk. From the village of Chassagnes we walked downhill along the main road. On the rocky outcrops next to the road, we recorded Knautia dipsacifolia, Arabis hirsuta, Dianthus gratianopolitanus, Alyssum alyssoides and Lavandula angustifolia. Down in the valley we searched for wild plants on the shore of the Chassezac river. Access to the river was quite easy because of a site for canoe rentals. The shores were mostly covered with trees. We found typical species like Gratiola officinalis, Helosciadium nodiflorum, Bidens frondosa and Glyceria notata near the river. Remarkable was Osmunda regalis that grew on several rocks in the water. Near the bridge we found Hemerocallis fulva (see picture).

13 June 2022: Around Le Cheneviou (1149m)  (Google map)

Gentiana lutea Because of the heat we thought it was wise to find some higher altitudes. Therefore we went to the mountain Le Ceneviou, which is about 1149 meters above sea level. We followed the D4 up hill and after a while we found ourselves in an area at the altitude of the tree line. From the car we already noticed huge quantities of Gentiana lutea (see picture) in the grassy meadows. We zig-zagged through the area and recorded other subalpine species like Plantago alpina and Meum athamanticum together with Herniaria hirsuta, Scleranthus perennis, Silene nutans and Conopodium majus. Armeria arenaria was abundant throughout. There was a little stream with water and a lots of dragonflies. Plants that took profit of the humid situation were Veratrum album, Phyteuma nigrum, Montia fontana, Lathyrus linifolius and Ornithogalum umbellatum. After that we followed a track that went into the forest, mainly consisting of Pinus nigra. In the undergrowth we found Scorzonera humilis, Lepidium heterophyllum and Luzula nivea. When we reached an asphalt road, we walked back to our car. Alongside the road there were plenty of new plant species to be recorded, like Barbarea intermedia, Anthericum liliago, Genista tinctoria and Hippocrepis comosa.

13 June 2022: Ruisseau de Petit Paris near Montselgues  (Google map)

When we drove back to the main valley, a small stream with moist meadows attracted our attention. At first we noticed the white flowers of Trocdaris verticillatum. In the meadow there were many specimens of Dactylorhiza. Establishing the correct species name is always a bit tricky with Dactylorhiza, but in our case the plants had dried out completely, making it impossible to establish the species name. The plants were accompanierd by Anthyllis vulneraria and Caltha palustris. The small stream offered us many other wild plant species, like Chrysosplenium oppositifolium, Cardamine pratensis and Viola palustris. There was even a small waterfall with stones covered in moss vegetation. It was a nice place to be indeed.

13 June 2022: Sablières (Google map)

Erica cinerea We had hoped to visit the river La Drobie near Sablières, expecting that the river would be easily accessible from the village. Unfortunately, that proved not to be the case. The hill slopes were very steep and the river was very far down below the houses. We did not feel like putting too much effort in climbing downhill (and having to go up again afterwards), so we parked our car on a shady spot outside the town and recorded Erica cinerea (see picture), Linaria pelisseriana, Malva neglecta and Amaranthus deflexus in the direct surroundings of the parking area.

13 June 2022: Les Chanels  (Google map)

The village of Les Chanels near the town of Payzac is very beautiful. The houses are old and the roads are narrow. Although there is a gîte, we did not encounter any other tourists. Or Frenchman, for that matter: the town was completely desolate. But that gave us an excellent opportunity to wander through the alleys and the narrow staircases without being disturbed. We recorded (mainly on the walls of the houses) species like Campanula erinus, Asarina procumbens and Antirrhinum majus. There were clearly some Mediterranean influences visible in the vegetation; quite different from the subalpine environment in which we had started the day!

14 June 2022: D122 near Suc de Montivernoux (1312m)  (Google map)

Gentianella campestris In order to record more subalpine plant species, we went up north. We were heading for the Mont Gerbier de Jonc at 1551 meters above sea level, but on our way we noticed many orchids and Eriophorum angustifolium in a moist meadow next to the road. Already in the ditch separating the meadow from the road, we recorded nice plant species like Pingucula vulgaris, Hypericum maculatum, Trollius europaeus, Alchemilla monticola and Pedicularis palustris. We walked randomly through the meadow, waving friendly to a farmer that looked a bit puzzled but didn't seem to be bothered by our presence at all, and recorded Phyteuma orbiculare, Viola calcarata, Linum catharticum, Saxifraga granulata and some spectacular specimens of Gentianella campestris (see picture). There were many Dactylorhiza species present as well, but they were no longer in bloom, so it was not possible to establish the exact species name. Orchids we could recognize easily were Platanthera chlorantha and Gymnadenia conopsea. On the other side of the road we recorded Euphrasia stricta on a dry part of a moist field and Blitum bonus-henricus next to the dirt track. This sure was a good location to hunt wild plant species!

14 June 2022: Col du Pranlet / Suc d’Ourseyre (1371m)  (Google map)

Lilum martagon Next we stopped at the Col du Pranlet. From there a foot path went to the top of the hill Suc d’Ourseyre, at 1371 meters above sea level. We started our walk in a grassy environment, where we recorded Crepis mollis and Antennaria dioica. Soon the hill slope was covered with pine trees, under which we found Gentiana cruciata, Ranunculus montanus and Cicerbita plumieri. Remarkable was the large quantity of Dactylorhiza specimens in a more open part of the forest, which we believe to be Dactylorhiza sambucina. Unfortunately, the flowers were dried out completely, so this adds some uncertainty to our identification. We also noticed Gymnadenia conopsea here. At a higher altitude, the forest became less dense. There we found Lilium martagon (see picture). It was a bit early in the season for that plant, but we found several specimens that had flowers already. The top of the Suc d’Ourseyre was covered with Gentiana lutea and Platanthera chlorantha. We also recorded Fritillaria meleagris and Campanula scheuchzeri here. On our way down we recorded Cytisus purgans, Silene rupestris and Colchicum autumnale. This location sure was worth paying a visit !

14 June 2022: Mont Gerbier de Jonc (1551m)  (Google map)

Silene rupestris After a successful stop at the Suc d’Ourseyre, we visited the Mont Gerbier de Jonc at 1551 meters above sea level. This hill is a remarkable steep landmark with a volcanic origin: it is a lava dome that formed itself millions of years ago inside the crater of a volcano. The outer parts have eroded since then, buth the dome still exists. The majestic Loire river (see our BotanicalJourney in the Loire Valley) originates on the Mont Gerbier de Jonc. We had heard that the hill should be interesting for plant species. When we arrived we saw an enormous parking area and found out that the hill was an UNESCO-protected site. That means: lots of asphalt for cars, lots of people, lots of bars and restaurants and a mandatory one-way traffic on the walking paths. Not exactly our perception of visiting an nature reserve. Luckily we were there on a quiet day, so amidst several French tourists we followed the blue arrows and went up and then down the hill. During this hike we noticed only few new plant species, of which Lonicera alpigena and Rosa micrantha are the most noteworthy. We also recorded Silene rupestris, which we found between the rocks (see picture). If you want to look for subalpine plants, we recommend that you rather pay a visit to the Suc d’Ourseyre and skip the Mont Gerbier de Jonc altogether. Even the top of the hill was a bit of an anti-climax: there were hundreds of cairns made by visitors, so every non-human aspect of the site had completely disappeared. It is well possible that there might be a few less cairns since we have visited the place.

14 June 2022: Meadow near Mont Gerbier de Jonc  (Google map)

Pedicularis sylvatica Close to the Mont Gerbier de Jonc we found another wet meadow that looked interesting. Just as the meadow we visited earlier on the day, we recorded Platanthera chlorantha, Gymnadenia conopsea and Eriophorum angustifolium. However, there were new plant species to be found as well, like Pedicularis sylvatica (see picture) and Juncus filiformis. Spectacular was the finding of Dactylorhiza viridis, formerly known as Coeloglossum viride.

15 June 2022: Vineyard east of Labastide-de-Virac  (Google map)

Centaurea collina Staying in the Ardèche-region would not be successful without a visit to the Ardèche river. That meant for us driving east. We noticed that the soil consisted of more chalk than we saw in the surroundings of our holiday home. When we drove through a small vineyard east of Labastide-de-Virac we stopped our car and looked for plant species. There were several small vineyards, separated by strips of shrubbery and small trees. A farmer was driving through the field to chop the heads out of the grape vines. He murmured “bonjour”, waved friendly and seemed not to have a problem with us rummaging around. In a non-used part of the vineyard we recorded Centaurea collina (see picture) and Echinops rito. We crossed the road an checked out a strip with wild flowers adjacent to another vineyard. Here we recorded Euphorbia seguieriana, Ononis minutissima and Filago germanica.

15 June 2022: Gorges de l'Ardèche  (Google map)

Helichrysum italicum The goal of the day was to visit the Gorges de l'Ardèche. “Gorge” is French for ravine. Due to the calcareous nature of the soil, the river Ardèche has carved a deep and steep ravine in the landscape. The river can easily be accessed by canoe (which a lot of people quite understandably do), but getting there on foot proved to be a bit more work. From the car we descended via a steep rocky path in order to reach a path on the shore of the river. We walked through a forest mainly consisting of Quercus ilex. There were several plant species to be recorded, which were not on our list yet, such as Rosa arvensis, Cistus salviifolius, Cephalanthera longifolia and Teucrium botrys. The views over the Ardèche river were spectacular. Once we had reached the river, we found typical river plants like Impatiens parviflora, Impatiens glandulifera, Impatiens balfourii and also Collinsia heterophylla. On the rocky shores we recorded species like Campanula persicifolia, Polygonatum odoratum, Thalictrum minus, Lathyrus aphaca, Helichrysum italicum (see picture), Urospermum dalechampii and Scirpoides holoschoenus. We followed the river banks for quite a while and then we had to climb up the steep ravine again. A narrow footpath took us from the river all the way up to a camp site where access was strictly forbidden for non-customers. Pretending to be camping guests, we walked back to our car. Again the forest mainly consisted of Quercus ilex.

15 June 2022: Risseau des Esqueyras and Le Granzon near Berrias  (Google map)

In the hot and dry area of the Ardèche, we had not been very lucky recording plant species of moist habitats. So we paid a visit to the town of Berrias, where the tiny Risseau des Esqueyras flows into the Granzon river. In the risseau we saw a lot of crayfish, desperately huddled together in the last parts of the stream that actually consisted of water. We recorded Sparganium erectum, Carex pendula and Mentha suaveolens here. Then we crossed a former arable field with species like Amaranthus retroflexus, Panicum miliaceum and Setaria verticillata. The river Granzon was on the other side of the field. We descended to the water level and walked through the shallow water to a small island, consisting of gravel. There we recorded species like Veronica anagallis-aquatica and Mentha pulegium. As you can see, this stop was very useful for adding new species to our species list.

16 June 2022: Naves  (Google map)

Staehelina dubia The small town of Naves, near Les Vans, is yet another typical old Ardèchian town with lots of stone houses and narrow streets. Parking there is a bit difficult because the town is situated at the end of a cul-de-sac and because of the many visitors. We were in luck and in possession of a very small car, so we could find a parking space near to the village and close to a walking track heading up into the mountains very easy. On the rocks we recoded species like Globularia nudicaulis, Sedum hirsutum, Staehelina dubia (see picture) and Saponaria ocymoides. The vegetation was mostly very low (no trees present) and dry (no water present). The views over a ravine next to the village were spectacular, but the town itself was quite interesting as well. Many former garden plants had spread over the town. We recorded for example Campanula portenschlagiana, Buddleja davidii, Mercurialis annua and Erigeron karvinskianus.

16 June 2022: Villefort  (Google map)

We parked our car right under the nose of two police officers who were randomly pulling cars over to perform alcohol checks, when we realized we did not have a mandatory alcohol test with us. Fortunately the officers were not at all interested in us, so we could hunt wild plant species without questions having to be answered. The officers were quite busy interrogating a young man who had unclear substances in plastic bags lying in his car. On a rocky outcrop next to the road just outside the village we recorded Barbarea verna, Saxifraga moschata and Tanacetum parthenium. We headed into the town to buy an alcohol test just in case. And Rutger bought half a kilo of cherries on the local market. While enjoying the cherries we strolled back to our car, where the police officers still were dealing with the same man. Time for us to leave the scene unnoticed.

16 June 2022: Risseau des Morangiès  (Google map)

Because we wanted to record more plant species of moist habitats, we visited the Risseau des Morangiès, that flows into the Lac de Villefort. This lake is in fact an enormous water reservoir in the hills of the Cévennes. We followed a small path parallel to the risseau going through a Quercus ilex wood. We recorded several new plant species like Cardamine flexuosa and Polystichum setiferum. The forest was well developed and rich in different plant-, shrub- and tree species. Quite a nice place to look for wild plants! From a camping site we followed an asphalt road back to our car. We found Juncus tenuis, Senecio sylvaticus and Cytisus sessilifolius here.

16 June 2022: Alongside the D51  (Google map)

Aspleium obovatum Back in Villefort we followed the D51 that runs parallel to spectacular ravines of the river l’Altier. At the start of the road there was a sign saying “route barrée”, but we saw cars coming and going, so we decided to test our luck. We soon found out that there were indeed construction sites on the road, but with a little patience of the construction workers ad fellow car drivers, we managed to pass every obstacle. For us, things really got interesting where the steep rocky side of the road was wet with seepage water originating from higher grounds. On the moist rocks we recorded Sedum telephium subsp. maximum, Hypericum montanum, Leucanthemum monspeliense, Hieracium amplexicaule, Carex lepidocarpa and Asplenium obovatum (see  picture).

17 June 2022: The forest of Le Grand Tanargue (1511m)  (Google map)

On the last day of our BotanicalJourney in the Ardèche the French government issued a code red because of the high temperatures. Despite the urgent call to stay inside if possible, we made another plant hunting trip. To avoid the heat, we decided to go to a ski-resort called Croix de Bauzon. The cable charts (that are disused during the summer, so we had to walk) run to the summit of Le Grand Tanargue, which is at 1511 meters above sea level. The hill consists of ski slopes (grassy fields in the summer) and forests. We checked out both habitats, but we discovered that beech forest was by far the dominating on Le Grand Tanargue. In order to challenge ourselves, we started a new list of plant species. So we also recorded plant species that we had already seen in the days before.

Calamintha grandiflora We started our walk near the parking place, where we recorded more than hundred plant species within a few meters from our car. Noteworthy species were Conopodium majus, Polygonatum verticillatum, Heracleum sphondylium subsp. sibiricum, Silene nutans and Campanula scheuchzeri. Then we checked the grassy ski slopes, where we found Gentiana lutea, Ranunculus platanifolius and Meum athamanticum. A walk of about 9 kilometers took us through the beech forests. Here we recorded Doronicum austriacum, Maianthemum bifolium, Gnaphalium sylvaticum, Gymnocarpium robertianum and Aconitum lycoctonum subsp. vulparia. On a moist place we found Calamintha grandiflora (see picture). In a meadow around the dry spring of a dry mountain stream, we recorded Serratula tinctoria, Hieracium umbellatum and Sanguisorba officinalis. Very unusual was a part of our walk with a vegetation of very abundant Gentiana lutea under the pine trees. The forest was beautiful, although not very rich in wild plant species. Well, that is to say; we recorded 177 different wild plant species on this location.

17 June 2022: Risseau de la Loubeyre  (Google map)

Geranium nodosum Near the Risseau de la Loubeyre, that crosses the D24, we made a stop because we noticed Adenostyles alliariae and Lactuca plumeri (formerly known as Cicerbita plumeri). It was very funny to see on this very specific location a large part of the plant species that we recorded on the Grand Tanargue. Geranium nodosum (see picture) was a new sort to our species list.

After this successful day we drove back to our holiday home. There was only one appropriate way to celebrate the fact that we had recorded 822 different wild plant species in one week:

SPLASH !

List of the recorded plant species

PLEASE NOTE:
Exept for the forest of Le Grand Tanargue only the first finding of species is displayed. So species that were recorded, let's say, both on the 12th and the 13th of June ONLY are noted on the 12th.
