Plant recordings in May 2013

by Rutger Barendse and Jeroen Willemsen

Plant species of Bourgogne, Val de Loire, Charente-Maritime and Aquitane

In the spring of 2013 we decided to go on a BotanicalJourney not by plane, but by car. Rutgers wife kindly offered us the use of her camper van; an offer we gladly accepted. We decided to go to France. But first we wanted to visit the Belgian province of Namen (Namur) because we heard of some nice plant hunting areas there. After that we went just a little south to visit the town of Fumay in the French Lorraine area. There is a lovely camping municipal there on the borders of the river Meuse. The weather was not good and the forecasts were even worse. We crossed the north of France heading to the west where we visited the Loire valley, hoping to find thousands of fritillaries. From there we went further south and followed the Atlantic coast. We saw a large part of the Aquitane area including Les Landes and ended up in the French part of the Pyrenees.

Report of this BotanicalJourney

3 May 2013: Roly (Belgium) (Google Map)

Erysimum cheiri So first we visited some locations in the Belgian province of Namen/Namur. We were told that the old town of Roly was home to several spectacular wall-plants. One of them is named explicitly in the Belgian flora by Lambinon: Cymbalaria pallida. We parked our car and walked around in the town. There was a castle farm dating from the 14th century and there was an old church as well. The castle walls were home to several nice plant species like Cymbalaria muralis, Hieracium murorum, Centranthus ruber and Erysimum cheiri (see photo). We were constantly wondering why we were missing Cymbalaria pallida, but it just wasn't there. Could Lambinon be wrong after all? Nevertheless there were many fern species, like Asplenium scolopendrium, Cystopteris fragilis, Asplenium trichomanes and Asplenium ruta-muraria. In the area around the castle/farm there were also many specimens of Ranunculus auricomus present. Next to the church there was a grassy field in which we found Barbarea intermedia, Verbascum nigrum, Papaver argemone, Helianthemum nummularium, Sedum rupestre and the beautiful Campanula persicifolia. In the fields and the forests around Roly we also found several other plant species that flower in the spring, like Scrophularia vernalis and Anemone blanda. We just followed a path through the forest at random and found Circaea lutetiana, Myosotis sylvatica, Mercurialis perennis and Viola reichenbachiana. There were also some specimens of Primula x tommasinii, which is an intermediate form of Primula veris and Primula vulgaris. We left the forest just outside the village, walked past a house, and by pure coincidence stumbled upon a wall full with Cymbalaria pallida. So it was true then. Unfortunately the plants had no flowers yet. Nevertheless we could easily identify them by their conspicuous leaves.

3 May 2013: Surroundings of Roly - Mariembourg (Belgium) (Google Map)
Outside Roly we stopped at random near a meadow just to see if there were nice plant species there. After all the challenge for us is to make a list with as many different plant species as we can. So in order to get a long list we also have to make notes on common species. What better place to look for them than a meadow with horses in it? So we recorded Trifolium medium, Alopecurus pratensis and the leaves of Colchicum autumnale.

3 May 2013: Forest near Nismes (Belgium): Tienne aux Paquis (Google Map)

Veronica prostrata By now it was time to get more serious. We had heard of a nature reserve with meadows rich in lime stone. In the south of Belgium that means: spectacular plant species! So we went to the surroundings of Nismes where there is an area called Tienne aux Paquis. First we had to defy a malicious farm hound, but after heroically resisting its efforts to scare the hell out of us we managed to reach the forest and followed a small path. In the forest we recorded species like Ligustrum vulgare, Euphorbia amygdaloides, Carex sylvatica, Buxus sempervirens, Stachys alpina, Anemone nemorosa and Primula veris. The path led us more or less straight to the Tienne aux Paquis where we found Globularia bisnagarica, Pulsatilla vulgaris, Veronica prostrata (see photo) and Lathyrus linifolius. We also found Fragaria viridis, Viburnum lantana, Helleborus foetidus, Vincetoxicum hirundinaria, Hippocrepis comosa, Cerastium pumilum and Digitalis lutea. Among the many sedges present there were Carex humilis, Carex digitata and Carex caryophyllea. Orchid species were also at the scene: Orchis mascula and Platanthera chloranta, but also Ophrys species which were too small to identify. Probably they were O. holoserica? As you can see Tienne aux Paquis is worth visiting for anyone who likes botany!

3 May 2013: Fumay (Google Map)
After this successful stop (and the passing of the dog for the second time to get back to our car) we left Belgium and entered France. We stayed at the camping municipal in Fumay. Fumay is situated in the valley of the river Meuse, which cuts in deeply in the rocky landscape. The steep slopes alongside the river are covered with forests, but in the inside of the meanders the area is more flat and open. There were some bird watchers on the look for a certain bird of prey (of which I forgot the name) but we decided to make a stroll along the river Meuse and through the village of Fumay. We decided to "start" our plant species list in France from scratch so we needed to write down the common plant species as well. In fact this was a repetition of the species we found earlier that day in Roly, because the town of Fumay is rich in old walls as well. Again we recorded several plants that grow on walls like Cymbalaria muralis, Sedum rupestre, Herniaria glabra, Hieracium murorum and Pseudofumaria lutea. And fern species: Asplenium ceterach, Asplenium ruta-muraria, Asplenium trichomanes and Cystopteris fragilis. In a derelict area there was a nice specimen of Sambucus racemosa and I liked the many Gymnocarpium robertianum we found as well.

4 May 2013: Saint Martin du Tertre (Google Map)

Viburnum lantana The next day we headed for the west coast. Several kilometers south of Paris we stopped in the town of Sens, which is on the borders of the river Yonne. We noticed a limestone hill when we drove through the valley so we followed the road up hill towards the church of Saint Martin du Tertre and stopped when smoke was coming from the engine of our car. Since we were not able to drive any further, we walked around on the hill for a while. It proved to be an interesting area for plant hunting. Some of the species we found were Hippocrepis comosa, Eryngium campestre, Potentilla tabernaemontani, Minuartia hybrida, Ononis natrix, Stachys recta, Viburnum lantana (see photo), Himantoglossum hircinum, Erysimum virgatum, Genista anglica and Geranium rotundifolium.

4 May 2013: Neung-sur-Beuvron (Google Map)
We ended the day at the camping municipal of Neung-sur-Beuvron in the region of the Sologne. This town is situated, as is clear from the town name, near the river Beuvron. From the camp site a small foot path followed the river eastwards. The path lead through a light forest most of the time. This appeared to be a good choice for our plant species list: we added almost 200 new species within only 100 or 200 meters away from the camp site! Especially a damp grassy field was rich in plant species: Ranunculus bulbosus, Montia minor, Lathyrus pratensis, Ranunculus flammula, Cardamine pratensis, Carex riparia and Lotus pedunculatus were to be found here. On the more dry areas we recorded species like Anthoxanthum odoratum, Stellaria neglecta, Stellaria pallida, Chaerophyllum temulum, Silene latifolia (subsp. alba), Filago vulgaris, Barbarea vulgaris, Sedum telephium, Plantago coronopus and Amaranthus hybridus subsp. bouchonii. We followed the path directly on the border of the river Beuvron and through the woods. In the forest, which at one time seemed to be a garden (so we continued following the river while trying to keep very quiet) we found Viscum album, Sanguisorba minor subsp. minor, Hieracium pilosella, Poa nemoralis, Campanula rapunculus, Erophila verna and Rosa glauca. After that we visited the same forest by walking along the Rue de Veillas. You could easily reach that road by making your own path through the forest but we returned via the camp site. Along the asphalt road, we discovered Ranunculus paludosus, Verbena officinalis, Geranium purpureum, Geranium rotundifolium and Carex pilulifera. This sure was a very productive day!

5 May 2013: Étang de Panama near Romorantin (Google Map)

Ranunculus aquatilis A little south of Neung-sur-Beuvron, adjacent to the road heading for Romorantin, there was a lake of which the water level was artificially regulated. On Google Earth images the lake was full of water but when we passed it, it was completely dry. That gave us the opportunity to walk in and around the lake (called Étang de Panama). We started in the south and walked round the lake counter-clockwise. The dried up habitat provided us with several nice (semi)aquatic plant species, such as Juncus bufonius, Carex vesicaria, Oenanthe aquatica, Persicaria hydropiper, Rorippa palustris, Veronica scutellata and Ranunculus aquatilis (see photo). These species were on locations that were occasionally flooded. On more permanent dry places we found Saxifraga granulata, Bidens tripartita, Tragopogon pratensis subsp. pratensis, Gnaphalium luteo-album and Gnaphalium uliginosum. The north side of the lake was covered with pine forest but the soil was very wet, forming a habitat for species like Senecio sylvaticus, Carex acutiformis, Carex rostrata and Lythrum portula. In a more open area to the north and east side of the Étang we found Hydrocotyle vulgaris, Mentha aquatica, Utricularia vulgaris and Ranunculus peltatus.

5 May 2013: South of Billy (Google Map)

Ranunculus parviflorus We were heading towards the Loire valley where we hoped to see many Fritillaries. One of the rivers in the Loire catchment is La Sauldre, which flows into Le Cher, which flows into the Loire river. Our friend Dirk Hilbers wrote a Crossbill Guide with many interesting descriptions of plant life in the Loire valley. One of the areas he described is the area around the town of Billy. This area is rich in lime stone, and as you probably understand by now, that means spectacular plant species most of the time. Unfortunately a new football field had been built right on the spot where we wanted to look for plant species. Nevertheless several nice plants were to be found alongside the road and on spots that were neglected. The sight of a once beautiful but now heavily threatened habitat was somewhat saddening. In a field near the main road we found Euphorbia cyparissias, Lathyrus tuberosus, Ajuga genevensis and Crepis sancta. Ranunculus parviflorus (see photo) was sparingly present in left-over barren strips of land. On the edge of a small forest we found Ophrys sphegodes and Lithospermum arvense and finally a grassy meadow provided us with Globularia bisnagarica, Narcissus poeticus and Veronica prostrata.

5 May 2013: Étang de l'Arche (Google Map)

Scorzonera humilis A little to the north of Billy there was a large lake -with water this time- where we spotted Podiceps grisegena. In the vicinity of the lake we stopped at a grassy strip in the forest. At first our attention was drawn by the bright purple color of Anacamptis morio but soon we also found Pulmonaria angustifolia in the edge of the forest and Scorzonera humilis (see photo) on an open and muddy spot in the field. The presence of Carex caryophyllea, Carex tomentosa and Carex flacca made it easy to compare the characteristics of the three sedges.

5 May 2013: La Butte des Blumonts (Google Map)

Orchis purpurea The nature reserve of La Butte des Blumonts is described by Dirk Hilbers as well. This reserve is rich in lime stone... and in orchids! From the road we saw a big hill. On top of it we found many specimens of Orchis purpurea (see photo) and also Ophrys sphegodes, Gymnadenia conopsea and Platanthera chlorantha. Other interesting plant species were Blackstonia perfoliata, Muscari comosum, Muscari neglectum, Ornithogalum umbellatum, Polygala vulgaris, Carex tomentosa and Melampyrum arvense. A little lower there was a pond with Neottia ovata alongside it and in the swampy borders we found Eleocharis uniglumis, Carex panicea, Teucrium scordium, Taraxacum palustre (sect.), Filipendula vulgaris and Carex riparia.

5 May 2013: Near Les Mardelles (Google Map)

Arenaria montana And then... in the middle of nowhere we stopped because our attention was drawn by many specimens of Arenaria montana alongside the road. They were so beautiful that we just had to stop (see photo).

5 May 2013: Around camp site "La Fritillaire" in Savigny (Google Map)

Fritillaria meleagris It wouldn't be honest to deny that our expectations were high when we arrived at camp site "La Fritillaire" in Savigny. After all fritillaries are what the Loire valley is famous for, right? The camp site owner told us that indeed a week ago the site had been colored purple because of all the fritillaries. But since then the tourist season had started, yeah? So he had to mow everything in order to make his guests feel comfortable. Did we want to see the fritillaries? Too bad, we should have come earlier then... Of course we were not bothered by this. Surely we would find the plants in the surroundings of the camp site. So we walked around a bit but unfortunately it was already getting dark. The river Loire had a very high water level and many of the meadows were soaking wet. But after a little while we found the plant we had been waiting for: Fritillaria meleagris (see photo)! The next morning they were even more beautiful in the light of the rising sun.

6 May 2013: From Savigny to Candes St Martin (Google Map)

Trifolium subterraneum When we were driving on the D118 from Savigny to Candes St Martin we noticed some grassy fields on both sides of the road. We stopped the car and checked the area for plant species. This proved to be a good decision. On the south side of the road there was some sort of shooting area (not in use). This appeared to be a dry, sandy area, which was proved by the occurrence of species like Tragopogon pratensis subsp. orientalis, Jasione montana, Ornithopus compressus, Artemisia campestris subsp. campestris, Erodium cicutarium subsp. dunense, Petrorhagia prolifera and Trifolium subterraneum (see photo). Then we crossed the road and looked around in an area with some sort of abandoned air strip (?). We found Anacamptis morio, Neotinea ustulata, Ornithogalum umbellatum, Medicago polymorpha and Capsella rubella here.

6 May 2013: Candes St Martin (Google Map)

Buglossoides purpurocaerulea Candes St Martin is a small village situated at the point where La Vienne flows into the Loire river. The scenery from the top of the hill at Candes St Martin is spectacular: the water of La Vienne is black as night whilst the color of the Loire river is muddy-brown. The hill can be called spectacular for its wild plant species as well. We'll start with the orchid species. Orchis militaris, Ophrys sphegodes, Orchis simia, Himantoglossum hircinum and Orchis purpurea can be found in relatively high quantities here. The person that mowed the pastures carefully tried not to damage the orchids, which made it easy for us to find them. But there were other nice plant species as well. Climbing the hill via the small path going up from the parking area we recorded Smyrnium olusatrum, Fumaria muralis, Buglossoides purpurocaerulea (see photo), Clinopodium vulgare, Orobanche hederae and Alcea rosea. Going down hill through the old village provided us with Centranthus ruber, Parietaria judaica, Veronica cymbalaria, Papaver hybridum and Cnicus benedictus.

6 May 2013: Réserve Les Puys du Chinonais (Google Map)

Helianthemum appeninum La Réserve Les Puys du Chinonais is another one of the nice plant hunting spots described in Dirk Hilbers' Crossbill guide. The area contained a pine forest (Bois de Beaumont), which was partly removed by forest- and nature protection activities. There were quite large sandy areas on which we found Arenaria grandiflora, Armeria arenaria and Helianthemum appeninum (see photo). There were also several dry grassy fields in which we found species like Ophrys sphegodes, Anthyllis vulneraria and Lathyrus sphaericus. La Réserve Les Puys du Chinonais is not very big, but surely worth a visit! It was our last area within the continental climate zone, before we descended towards the coastal area with its Atlantic climate.

6 May 2013: Around camp site "Les Maraises" in St Martin, Île de Ré (Google Map)
Île de Ré is an island in the Atlantic ocean, near La Rochelle. As you will see it is a nice area for plant hunting, but if you go there please be prepared for large quantities of tourists and all the things that go with them. For sure it is not difficult to find a camping area. The true question is: is there a place for you available? In our case we went to camping Les Maraises, which was unattended so we just put up our tent in a quiet corner of the site. The day we arrived it was nice and sunny so we decided to make a walk around the camp site the same evening. Parts of the species we found were probably escapees from the many camp sites like Iris foetidissima, Buddleja davidii and Acanthus mollis. The area was dune-like and covered with pine forest, with typical species such as Pinus pinaster and in the undergrowth Polypodium vulgare and Polypodium interjectum. In more open areas we found Orchis anthropophora, Parentucellia latifolia, Salvia verbenacea, Datura stramonium, Aristolochia clematitis and Lagurus ovatus. We also found several orchids that we couldn't identify because it was too early for them to have flowers. Nevertheless Himantoglossum robertianum was easy to identify by its messy bunch of leaves.

7 May 2013: Anse du Martray (Île de Ré) (Google Map)
We were heading towards the west point of the island when we noticed a large piece of unused land next to the D735, near camp site De l'Océan. So we parked our car at a concrete strip near the sea where there were already several nice plant species characteristic for the coastal areas of the Atlantic. For example: Beta vulgaris subsp. maritima, Atriplex halimus, Sagina maritima, Plantago coronopus, Atriplex littoralis and Diplotaxis tenuifolia. In the field there were even more coastal plant species, like Crithmum maritimum, Juncus maritimus, Atriplex prostrata, Juncus ambiguus, Cakile maritima, Aster tripolium, Carex distans, Atriplex portulacoides and Hordeum marinum. The more we got away from the coast, the less clear the influcences of salt spray became. So finally we also found species like Vincetoxicum hirundinaria, Omphalodes littoralis, Trifolium suffocatum, Lavatera arborea, Ecballium elaterium, Carduus tenuiflorus and Malva sylvestris.

7 May 2013: Plage de la Conche and Forêt Domaniale de Linay (Île de Ré) (Google Map)
In the very northwest of the island we visited a dune area covered with pine forest: Pinus pinaster and Cupressus sempervirens. Here we found several species that are typical for sandy areas, like Phleum arenarium, Euphorbia paralias, Helichrysum stoechas, Artemisia campestris subsp. maritima, Matthiola tricuspidata, Centaurea calcitrapa, Glaucium flavum and Erodium lebelii. In the areas a bit further away from the sea we found Cistus salvifolius, Osiris alba, Parentucellia latifolia and even Conium maculatum.

7 May 2013: Réserve de Lilleau des Niges (Île de Ré) (Google Map)

Oxalis articulata A large part of the landscape on Île de Ré is formed by the "mining" of sea salt. As a result there are many former salt lakes and small dykes. One of the most spectacular nature reserves on Île de Ré is called Réserve de Lilleau des Niges. It consists of former salt lakes and a tidal creek that is penetrating the land. The reserve is nice for bird watchers but it turned out to be good for us as well. Especially species of muddy areas were present everywhere (due to tidal influences) like Ranunculus baudotii, Salicornia europaea, Suaeda maritima and Spartina anglica. On the drier areas such as the old salt lake dykes we found Genista hispanica and Picris hieracioides. Oxalis articulata was clearly detonating because of its conspicuous purple color (see photo). On the way back to the entrance of the reserve we spotted Ophrys apifera alongside the road.

7 May 2013: Les Evières (Île de Ré) (Google Map)
And then we got lost. The problem with many French tourist areas near the coast is that villas are sold by the dozen: they all look the same (white walls, red tiles, surrounded by large fences). So when you're driving around in a town called Le-Bois-Plage-en-Ré you just don't know where you came from and where you were going to. But after a while we came across an open strip of dunes, giving access to the sea. We decided to check it out and immediately found Ophrys sphegodes. We also found Senecio vulgaris var. hybernicus, Medicago marina, Alyssum alyssoides, Viola kitaibeliana and Omphalodes littoralis there.

7 May 2013: Dunes near the Bridge of Île de Ré (Google Map)

Lathyrus sphaericus The eastern part of the island is a narrow strip of land, giving just enough room to the road leading to the bridge, some houses, a few small dunes and a beach. We started a walk at the north side of the road where we used the cover provided by the small dunes to approach some bird species quite close: Bar-tailed Godwit, Ruddy Turnstone and Sanderling did not notice our presence. But we were looking for plants, of course. We found Koeleria albescens, Herniaria ciliolata, Pancratium maritimum and Matthiola sinuata here. Plants with a significant decorative value were Dianthus gallicus and Eschscholzia californica. Then we crossed the road and the town, and went to the beach on the south side where we found maritime species like Eryngium maritimum, Silene uniflora and Lobularia maritima. In the dunes we identified Alopecurus utriculatus, Galium murale and Echium plantagineum. The dunes got higher and higher and before we even noticed it we had stumbled upon old Second World War bunkers. There were several Legume species present, such as Vicia villosa, Vicia lutea and Lathyrus sphaericus (see photo). We found two orchids on the bunkers, namely Himantoglossum robertianum and Orchis anthropophora. Among the other species present were Salsola kali, Valerianella eriocarpa and Legousia hybrida.

8 May 2013: Point Ronde near La Tremblade and Ronce les Bains (D25) (Google Map)
After a sleepless night thanks to some partying Frenchmen we left the island. South of the delta of the river Le Seudre we stopped near a roundabout at Ronce Les Bains, because we noticed the flowers of Silene italica. While being there we recorded several other species such as Oenothera biennis and Trifolium nigrescens.

8 May 2013: Beach and Forest near Ronce les Bains (Google Map)

Cephalanthera longifolia The Forêt domaniale de la Coubre near Ronce Les Bains is a dense forest with both pine trees and deciduous trees. The most conspicuous plant in the undergrowth was Cephalanthera longifolia (see photo) which occurred in thousands and thousands of individuals there. Other species typical for this forest were Prunus cerasifera, Ficus carica, Ailanthus altissima, Ruscus aculeatus and Fallopia dumetorum.

8 May 2013: La pointe Espagnole (Ronce les Bains) (Google Map)

Monotropa hypopitys Cephalanthera longifolia looks to be some sort of regional speciality for the surroundings of the Seudre, because it was abundant at La Pointe Espagnole as well. We parked our car in the forest and followed the road towards the sea. In the dunes we found Globularia alypum, Oenothera laciniata, Linum usitatissimum and Tuberaria guttata. In the bushes by the parking area we found Monotropa hypopitys (see photo) which is always spectacular in one way or another.

8 May 2013: Near La Palmyre (Google Map)

Trifolium strictum Just before we would have entered the town of La Palmyre we noticed a swampy area left of the road. So we parked our car and made ourselves a path through the shrubbery. After all the maritime species of the previous walks it was nice to be in a sweet water swamp for once. We first walked through a very wet area where we found Anacamptis laxiflora. After the wet field, things got a bit drier but nevertheless the area was somewhat swampy. As we expected this immediately resulted in new species: Stachys palustris, Cirsium dissectum, Scorzonera humilis, Cladium mariscus, Hypericum tetrapterum, Veronica catenata, Oenanthe fistulosa, Sparganium erectum and Apium nodiflorum were among them. We also found many different Clover species: Trifolium stellatum, Trifolium dubium, Trifolium micranthum, Trifolium strictum (see photo) and Trifolium squamosum for example. When we were back at our car and drove on for some 100 meters we saw many specimens of Anacamptis morio and Cephalanthera longifolia.

8 May 2013: Le moulin Doré, south of Meschers (Gironde) (Google Map)

Astragalus monspessulanus The Gironde truly is a spectacular "river". Even in the pouring rain. If fact, maybe the rain gives it even more atmosphere. We followed the northern border of the Gironde, which is rich in lime stone, and we parked our car near Le Moulin Doré, south of Meschers-sur-Gironde. A small path went down to the cliffs where there were several fisherman's cabins standing on large poles high above the sea. Not a place for people with a fear of heights! Next to the path we found Ophrys sphegodes, Gymnadenia conopsea, Lathyrus latifolius and Silene vulgaris. Unfortunately a fence prevented us from entering the grassy fields, which looked interesting enough. The cliffs were more or less easy accessible because of the many paths leading towards the fishermen's huts. We found Kickxia spuria, Veronica opaca, Astragalus monspessulanus (see photo), Blackstonia perfoliata, Limonium lychnidifolium, Limonium binervosum and Salvia verbenaca here. Finally we reached a muddy area at sea level. Here we found Triglochin maritima, Puccinellia maritima and Inula salicina.

9 May 2013: Near St Thomas de Conac (Google Map)

Tragopogon porrifolius When we drove through the town of St Thomas de Conac our attention was drawn by a valley with lime stone slopes. It was the valley of the small river Ruisseau des Joncs. We started our walk west of the road in an area that was not in use for agricultural purposes. We were not sure whether the site was officially a Nature Reserve. The plant species were interesting enough to justify any protected status of the area. The site was rich in orchids such as Orchis anthropophora, Anacamptis pyramidalis, Ophrys apifera, Ophrys sphegodes and Ophrys insectifera. Other species, most of them a clear indicator of an environment of lime stone, were Linum tenuifolium, Dorycnium pentaphyllum, Festuca pallens, Teucrium montanum, Galium pumilum, Blackstonia perfoliata, Carduncellus mitissimus and Tragopogon porrifolius (see photo). The forest alongside the Ruisseau des Joncs was very dense and therefore difficult to enter. Nevertheless we recorded Neottia ovata, Lathraea clandestina, Equisetum telmateia and Symphytum tuberosum there. A little up the hill to the east of the road we found Bromopsis inermis, Orchis purpurea, Anacamptis pyramidalis, Tragopogon pratensis and Galium glaucum. We then spotted a vineyard a little to the north in which we recorded Kickxia commutata, Coronilla scorpioides, Linum perenne, Scrophularia auriculata and some other species.

9 May 2013: Pôle nature de Vitrezay (Google Map)
We were looking for a certain publication obout the flora of the Gironde area, which just had been published. We hoped it would be for sale at the visitor centre of Pôle nature de Vitrezay. Unfortunately that was not the case, but since we were there, we walked around looking for new plant species. There was a small creek next to the road where we found Schoenoplectus triqueter, Glaux maritima, Oenanthe lachenalii, Carex divisa and some other species of wet coastal areas. Noteworthy was also an intermediate of Nasturtium microphyllum and Nasturtium officinale.

9 May 2013: Railway area in Ychoux (Les Landes) (Google Map)
Les Landes is not a region known by it rich plant life, since a large part of the region is covered with pine forests. Nevertheless we stopped now and then at surroundings that seemed suitable for new plant species. Thus we ended up at some deserted railway tracks and a former goods station near the railway station of Ychoux (which sounds like someone sneezing). This proved to be a good spot for plant hunting although the heavy rain made it quite difficult to identify some species and to take good pictures of them. Therefore we collected some material for identification afterwards. Silene gallica was without any doubt the prettiest of the species present at Ychoux, but Linaria micrantha was also very nice to find. Other species were Ornithopus perpusillus, Petrorhagia prolifera and Dittrichia graveolens. At the borders of the railway tracks we found shrubs like Pyracantha coccinea and Phytolacca americana.

9 and 10 May 2013: Biscarosse - Mayotte (Google Map)

Carum verticillatum It had been raining all day and we were getting quite miserable by the end of the day. But just before darkness fell, the sky cleared up. By that time we were well settled on a small camp site in Mayotte. We immediately seized the opportunity and walked away from the camp site heading north though a dense pine forest (remember - we were in Les Landes). Here we found species you might expect, like Ilex aquifolium, Osmunda regalis, Pteridium aquilinum and Viola canina. And believe it or not, this was the first time this Botanical Journey we recorded Lamium purpureum! Other pleasant surprises we found in a more open area: Parentucellia viscosa, Polygala serpyllifolia, Sisyrinchium bermudiana and Euphrasia stricta s.l. We were desperately looking for a small pond in the forest. We later saw on satellite images that we had been close by, but we couldn't find it at the time. Nevertheless there was one particular ditch with crystal clear water, running at a rather high speed. In the ditch we found many species of aquatic environments, such as Hypericum elodes, Potamogeton polygonifolius, Eleocharis multicaulis, Eleocharis palustris, Eleogiton fluitans, Schoenus nigricans, Anagallis tenella and even the spectacular Carum verticillatum (see photo).

10 May 2013: Alongside the D652 between Biscarosse and Parentis-en-Born (Google Map)

Viola lactea Because the ditch in the wood was such a success (we returned there a day later to make some pictures of the plants we had found) we decided to check out another ditch which we chose more or less at random. It was alongside the D652 from Biscarosse to Parentis-en-Born. Everything was very little here. We had to lay down on the ground in order to find and recognise the plant species. They were interesting nevertheless, for example Radiola linoides, Juncus capitatus, Spergularia rubra, Cicendia filiformis, Corrigiola litoralis, Illecebrum verticillatum and Crassula tillaea. Some of the larger species were Lythrum junceum, Gypsophila muralis, Conyza bilbaoana and Viola lactea (see photo).

10 May 2013: Near St Paul-en-Born (Google Map)
Near St Paul-en-Born we noticed a small river that passed underneath the road. It was the Ruisseau d'Escource. We followed a path going through a nice forest with many deciduous trees. There were lots of dragonflies hovering over the water and resting in the vegetation. Near the stream we found (semi)aquatic plant species like Myosotis scorpioides, Filipendula ulmaria, Callitriche obtusangula, Carex paniculata, Equisetum x litorale (E. arvense x fluviatile) and Caltha palustris. On the remains of an old weir (made of stone) we discovered Asplenium trichomanes and Asplenium adiantum-nigrum.

10 May 2013: Coast at Contis-Plage (Google Map)

Convolvulus sepium We decided it was about time to go back to the coast again. So we went to the beach at Contis-plage. Here the dense pine forests end abruptly in the sandy dunes of the Atlantic coast. It is surprising how some plant species seem to manage to live on the bare sand. We found, among others, Polygonum maritimum, Silene uniflora, Honckenya peploides, Linaria thymifolia, Convolvulus sepium (see photo), Ornithopus pinnatus and Jacobaea maritima.

10 May 2013: Alongside the D340 near Lit-et-Mixe (Google Map)
Near Line-et-Mixe we stopped again at a narrow road near a stream. In this case it was the Ruisseau des Vignes. We spotted Stellaria graminea and Thelypteris palustris there.

10 May 2013: Lake south of Sousterons (Google Map)

Trifolium incarnatum South of Sousterons there are two major lakes: Étang d'Hardy and Étang Blanc. The lakes meet at the Ruisseau d'Hardy, and that is where we went looking for plants. In the water of the Étang Blanc we spotted Myrica gale, Cladium mariscus and Elodea nuttallii. At the borders we found Persicaria hydropiper, Veronica anagallis-aquatica and Oenanthe crocata. When we drove back to the main road (Google Map) our attention was drawn by a large amount of Trifolium incarnatum (see photo).

10 May 2013: Saubrigues  (Google Map)
The camp site south of Saubrigues was a nice and quiet one. Even the farmer/owner was not present. And they had the best shower ever! So we put up our gear and started a new BotanicalJourney at the back of the camp site where the vegetation had not been mown yet. There was a small stream running through the grassy fields which provided us with Nasturtium officinale, Silene dioica, Campanula patula and even Wahlenbergia hederacea. Then we followed the road back into the valley of a small stream and took a small unpaved path to the right. People had been dumping garden waste there and Zantedeschia aethiopica was flourishing as a result of it. The path went into a small forest where we found nice species like Gamochaeta americana, Gnaphalium luteo-album, Gnaphalium sylvaticum, Simethis planifolia, Silene portensis and Hieracium eriophorum on an open, somewhat rocky area. Once the path had gone more into the woods we found Hieracium sabaudum, Senecio nemorensis and Conopodium majus in a more shaded environment.

11 May 2013: Château ducal de Gramont in Bidache (Google Map)
The next day, still heading south, we passed the river La Bidouze which is the border of the region of Les Landes and the region of Pyrenées Atlantiques. We parked our car at a parking area and followed the river to the west. Alongside the river there were rather conspicuous species like Galega officinalis and Oenothera rosea, but in a swampy field we also found less decorative plants like Cyperus longus, Oenanthe peucedanifolia and Gaudinia fragilis. At a farm we turned around and headed back to the road. We climbed the hill towards an old castle by the name of "Château ducal de Gramont" where we found Umbilicus rupestris and Asplenium ceterach on the walls. On the steep slopes of the castle there were many specimens of Helleborus viridis present.

11 May 2013: Forêt communale de Labets-Biscaye (Google Map)
So now we were in the region of Pyrenées-Atlantiques. The views on the Pyrenean mountains were spectacular. The Forêt communale de Labets-Biscaye was an area with just small hills (compared to the real hills we could see at the horizon), but they were steep nevertheless! We kind of lost our exact location, so we just drove around a bit before we parked our car at the sudden end of a road. There we continued along an unpaved forest path by foot. We found Lythrum hyssopifolia in a former muddy pool in the tracks of big forestry machines. Further into the forest we found species like Polystichum setiferum, Carex sylvatica, Carex pendula, Sanicula europaea, Rosa sempervirens, Ranunculus polyanthemos, Veronica urticifolia, Lysimachia nemorum and Veronica montana. Species of the early spring were still present as well, such as Primula elatior, Oxalis acetosella and Anemone nemorosa. Along a path near grassy pastures we found Aquilegia vulgaris, Lathyrus linifolius, Lathyrus nissolia and Saxifraga hirsuta. After many days of rain the sun violently bursted through the clouds. Overwhelmed with joy and sunny warmth I fell asleep in a recently mown pasture. Fortunately Rutger kept on going and discovered Anagallis tenella and Myosoton aquaticum while I was dreaming of other pleasant things.

11 May 2013: Alongside the D242 near Mauléon (Google Map)

Potentilla montana Still not knowing exactly where we were, we drove around a little bit more when we suddenly saw many specimens of Orchis mascula. We were still a bit short on the orchid department so we checked out the area for more. It was some sort of rough terrain which seemed to have been forgotten by farmers. Soon we found Gymnadenia conopsea. But there were many other nice plants as well, like Trifolium montanum, Cruciata glabra, Potentilla montana (see photo) and Globularia bisnagarica. In a shaded ditch we found Polystichum aculeatum.

11 May 2013: Alongside the D918 near Mauléon (Google Map)

Veronica ponae A little south of the town of Mauléon there was a former camp site at the border of the river Le Saison. We could clearly recognize the former emplacements of the camp site (and they would still be suitable for camping purposes!). We walked along the former tent places and found plant species like Cardamine impatiens, Trifolium incarnatum, Campanula patula, Hesperis matronalis, Aconitum napellus and Lathyrus sylvestris. The path continued along the river underneath trees like Liriodendron tulipifera, Ulmus minor, Tilia platyphyllos and Salix purpurea. The undergrowth consisted of Malva moschata, Allium ursinum, Geum urbanum, Hypericum androsaemum, Pulmonaria officinalis and Melica uniflora. We crossed a stream using a former electricity pole that was now a bridge and entered some sort of rocky island in the river. On the rocks we recorded Hypericum hirsutum, Hieracium murorum, Erigeron karvinskianus, Veronica ponae (see photo) and Saxifraga hirsuta. This sure was a little plant paradise!

11 May 2013: Abense de Haut / Tardets (Google Map)
We wanted to go up a little higher in the Pyrenean mountains, but decided to put up a camp in the valley of the Saison and make day trips into the mountains. So the camp site in the town of Abense-de-Haut was our home for a couple of nights. After our arrival we walked to the village of Tardets along the south bank of the river. In the dense and sometimes swampy forest we found species like Geranium phaeum, Myosotis decumbens, Pimpinella saxifraga, Stachys alpina and Lamium maculatum. When we got out of the forest we looked for more plant species between the rocks and on the stone walls of the river banks. There we found Erinus alpinus, Lamium garganicum, Muehlenbeckia complexa and Centranthus ruber.

12 May 2013: Paserelle d'Holzarte (Google Map)

Primula farinosa Rivers cut deep into the karstic landscape of the Pyrenean mountains. For example the Gorges de Holtzarte are formed by the river Olhadoko Erréka and form a ravine of sometimes hundreds of meters deep. The area is easily accessible for pedestrians. There even is a giant hanging bridge from which you look down more than 180 meters! Our BotanicalJourney started at a relatively low altitude in a light forest with many open spaces. Here we found species like Hepatica nobilis, Lathyrus luteus, Scrophularia alpestris, Pulmonaria affinis, Phyteuma spicatum and Pulmonaria angustifolia. On moist places we found Adiantum capillus-veneris, Crepis paludosa and Chrysosplenium oppositifolium.

Fritillaria pyrenaica The path slowly ascended. At a little higher altitude we found species like Pinguicula grandiflora, Orchis mascula, Valeriana tuberosa, Euphorbia brittingeri, Dianthus furcatus and Scilla verna. At the faremost point of this trip the environment had become subalpine, which was indicated by plants like Bartsia alpina, Primula farinosa (see photo above), Gentiana clusii, Polygala alpestris, Fritillaria pyrenaica (see lower photo), Gymnadenia nigra, Primula veris subsp. columnae, Alchemilla alpine, Gentiana nivalis, Pedicularis foliosa and Narcissus pseudonarcissus subsp. bicolor. This truly was unexpected and spectacular! Going down hill we also recorded Dactylorhiza maculata, Cirsium helenioides, Daboecia cantabrica, Pedicularis sylvatica and Crocus nudiflorus. Boy, this was a GOOD trip!

13 May 20013: Santa Grazie / Ste Engrâce (Google Map)
The next day, when we were on our way to another gorge, our attention was drawn by the conspicuous flowers of Antirrhinum majus. So we quickly stopped for a moment to check out the area. We found Calepina irregularis, Linaria supina and Senecio adonidifolius there as well.

13 May 20013: Gorges de Ehujarre (Google Map)

We wanted to visit another gorge, parked our car at the Roman church of Ste Engrâce and followed the road into the valley. Next to the road were many specimens of Paris quadrifolia, which is always nice to find. A little bit further up the road we also found Geranium phaeum (see photo). The path continued to go up hill through a forest. The altitude was much lower than the path of the Gorges de Holtzarte, so we didn't really get out of the forest. Here we recorded Buxus sempervirens, Arabis ciliata, Conopodium majus, Euphorbia hyberna and Pyrola minor. At some point there was a more open area at the bottom of a former land slide with many large boulders. We found species like Aconitum lycoctonum, Erica vagans, Laserpitium nestleri and Biscutella laevigata here. Climbing up the boulders provided spectacular views on several birds of prey hovering around, like Gyps fulvus and Neophron percnopterus. We also found Fritillaria pyrenaica here.

13 May 20013: Alongside the D113 (Google Map)

Serapias lingua On our way back we stopped alongside the D113 because there were large amounts of Rhinanthus angustifolius alongside the road. We walked along the road, soon to find Orchis mascula, Rosa rugosa, Hieracium vogesiacum and Leontodon pyrenaicus as well. We were very surprised when we also found Serapias lingua (see photo). We didn't expect that! Sheer luck was our finding of Ophioglossum vulgatum, with which we concluded this years' Botanical Journey. It was rich in plants indeed: we recorded a total of 1,115 different species!

List of the recorded plant species

PLEASE NOTE:
Mostly we recorded only the first finding of the species. So species that were both recorded on the 13th and the 15th of March ONLY are noted on the 13th.
