Slovenia

Plant recordings in May 2016

by Rutger Barendse and Jeroen Willemsen

The variegated landscapes of Slovenia

For the first time since the start of this web site, we embarked on a Botanical Journey to Slovenia. Our primary aim was to explore the Triglav mountains and then travel further south to the Slovenian part of Istria. Both Triglav and Istria boast an abundance of lime, making them fascinating destinations for plant enthusiasts. As our journey unfolded, we decided to extend our exploration to the eastern regions of Slovenia as well. This experience revealed to us the true beauty of Slovenia, a country that is truly worth considering for any future Botanical Journey!

Report of this BotanicalJourney

2 May 2016: Around the Seehamer See near Grossseeham (Germany) (Google map)

Our journey began with a stop at a small camp site in the town of Grossseeham, Germany. On the way to the town, we had already seen some interesting swampy fields with Caltha palustris. So we put up our tent and then followed a small path on the shore of a lake called "Seehamer See", where we recorded Mentha longifolia and Cirsium oleraceum.

As we strolled through the grassy pastures, we encountered several specimens of Primula veris, and among the trees we found Anemone nemorosa. We continued following the path and soon reached a vast marshy area with numerous sedges. Though it was still early in the season, we endeavored to identify the sedges as best we could. Among them, we managed to recognize Carex caryophyllea, C. diandra, C. vulpina, C. davaliana and several others. In addition, we also came across some striking species such as Valeriana dioica, Cirsium palustre and Menyanthes trifoliata. The first specimens of Dactyllorhiza majalis had flowers, though they had only just begun to bloom.

We followed a road on an embankment that cut through the marshy lands, where we spotted Sonchus palustris. However, what really amazed us was the unexpected discovery of Primula farinosa here as well! As the evening approached, darkness gradually enveloped the surroundings, making it challenging to continue documenting more plant species. Nevertheless, we were content with the findings we had already recorded. In the darkness of the evening, we heard the distinct call of Hyla arborea, of which Rutger was able to make a nice sound recording.

3 May 2016: Around Dovje (Triglav) (Google map)

Lamium orvala Near the town of Dovje, just after taking the first exit from the highway when entering Slovenia coming from Salzburg, we discovered a nice camp site. Its charm lay not only in its peacefulness but also in the immediate access it provided to explore the local flora. We first put up our tent approximately 2 meters away from Anacamptis morio. A good start for our Slovenian plant list!

Walking around on the camp site, we came across various plant species, like Biscutella laevigata, Narcissus poeticus and the fern Asplenium trichomanes growing on a rocky surface. In the forest we found a peculiar Anemone that turned out to be Anemone trifolia. Leaving the campsite behind, we followed a rocky trail that led us deeper into the forest. Soon enough, we faced a small river crossing that prompted us to take off our shoes. This provided us with ample opportunity to appreciate and examine species such as Lamium orvala (see picture), Helleborus viridis, Viola mirabilis and Orchis mascula.

Chamaecytisus purpureus Apart from the various sedges, including Carex ornithopoda, the most spectacular discovery for us was Scrophularia canina. We followed the path all the way up to a hill called Kališe, passing a range of fascinating habitats, such as grassy pastures and mixed forests. We recorded Chamaecytisus purpureus (see picture) in this area.

Hacquetia epipactisWhile wandering through the forest, we encountered a plant that was entirely new to us. After an extensive search, we identified it as Hacquetia epipactis (see picture). Another nice find was Cardamine enneaphylla, which we spotted somewhere near a dirt road, along with Polystichum braunii. Throughout the ascent, we noticed numerous leaves of Crocus, but it wasn't until we reached an altitude of about 1000 meters that we were treated to the sight of their flowers. Most of them were white, while some displayed a charming pink hue, which is often the case with Crocus albiflorus. During this stage of our journey, we also recorded Gentiana verna. We were fortunate enough to find some early specimens that had already begun to bloom.

Unfortunately, our original plan to take a round trip through the forest was thwarted by unexpected deforestation activities in the area. The absence of a proper path compelled us to retrace our steps and follow the same route back to the campsite. Despite this setback, we were pleasantly surprised to encounter new plant species in places we had already explored. For instance, we discovered Cephalantera longifolia, which we had completely missed on our way up. Today we recorded 275 different plant species. This sure was a good start for our Slovenian plant list!

4 May 2016: Zgornja Radovna (Google map)

We drove a little distance into the Triglav Nature Reserve, until we reached a Tilia tree that, according to scientists, was more than 400 years old. A sign told us that inhabitants of the area preferred to talk about their tree as being over 800 years old. The interesting thing is that the tree does not get any direct sunlight during two months every year. That is a rather extreme habitat! We parked our car, because we noticed the pink flowers of Cardamine pentaphyllos there. Interestingly enough, it was mixed with another Cardamine species, namely Cardamine enneaphyllos.

Primula auricula We followed a path through the forest, where we recorded species like Caramine trifoliata. In a slightly more open section of the forest, we observed Erica herbacea and Polygala chamaebuxus. Following a dry river bed, we encountered Equisetum ramosissimum. Returning through the forest, we decided to climb a steep slope to reach the rocks, and though it was challenging, the rewards were worth it. There, we discovered the stunningly beautiful Primula auricula (see picture) as well as Rodothamnus chamaecistus, Ranunculus hybridus, Soldanella minima and numerous specimens of Pinguicula alpina. As we made our way back through the forest, we saw Hacquetia epipactis again, a plant we had just learned to recognize the day before.

4 May 2016: Kurja Vas (Google map)

Gentiana verna In the same area, we stopped at a grassy meadow, that was adorned with the vibrant blue hues of numerous Gentiana verna (see picture). Among the impressive display of blue, we also noticed several specimens of Crocus albus, Primula veris and Ranunculus montanus. We found both pink and whitish specimens of Viola rupestris. This was a sub-alpine meadow of exceptional beauty, featuring a delightful array of plant species! A little further on, we could add Gentiana acaulis to our growing list of botanical discoveries.

4 May 2016: Water fall Peričnik in the Vrata valley (Google map)

Ranunculus montanus In the Vrata valley, we hiked up the path leading to the top of the Peričnik waterfall and made a delightful discovery of Globularia cordifolia there. As we explored the surroundings, a white flower of a Helleborus caught our attention. Upon closer examination, we noticed that the plant exhibited characteristics similar to both Helleborus niger and Helleborus viridis. We concluded that we had likely stumbled upon an intermediate form of the two species, which was an exciting find. A nice finding too, was Lathyrus vernus. Of Ranunculus montanus (see picture) we found a specimen with double petals. That was very funny to see.

5 May 2016: Karst area Kraski Ro near Osp (Google map)

In the lovely small town of Osp, there's a bustling campsite, attracting numerous rock climbers who come here to conquer the steep rocky cliffs just outside the town. We also tried our hand at rock climbing, but lacking experience with climbing equipment, we had to stick to a footpath and partly find our own way up the cliffs. The weather changed from cold and rainy in the north part of Slovenia, to pleasant and sunny in the south, with a warm breeze blowing in from the Adriatic sea. This shift in weather brought about a whole new variety of plant life, as you can imagine.

Onosma helveticaOur journey began in the village of Osp, where we spotted species like Orobanche gracilis, Euphorbia dulcis, Scorpiurus muricatus and Argyrolobium zanonii. As we made our way to the cliffs, which were rich in lime, we encountered species like Stachys recta, Ornithogalum pyramidalis, Dictamus albus and Teucrium montanum. One of the most spectacular discoveries was Onosma helvetica (see picture), resembling an Onosma we had previously seen in the Mainzer Sand (Germany) during our BotanicalJourney to the Monte Baldo.

Melampyrum barbatum ssp. carstiense Upon reaching the top of the cliffs, we found the area heavily grazed by numerous horses, resulting in very short vegetation. Many orchids were present, but most of them were difficult to identify. Nonetheless, we managed to recognize Anacamptis morio (including a completely white specimen) and Orchis tridentata. Close to a rock wall, we came across the yellow-flowered Melampyrum barbatum ssp. carstiense (see picture), which took some effort to properly identify. In the forested area, we recorded species like Limodorum abortivum, Melittis melissophyllum and Orchis purpurea.

In a more open space, we found the remains of several Ophrys species. Only a few of them were in bloom, and we identified them as Ophrys holoserica. However, due to variations in petal color, we suspected there might be some specimens of an intermediate between O. holoserica and O. sphegodes as well. We learned from a website dedicated to Slovenian orchids that this is considered to be the subspecies Ophrys holoserica ssp. untchjii. A name that is almost unpronounceable.

5 May 2016: Around the camp site in Osp (Google map)

In the evening, we made the decision to escape the noise of our fellow campsite guests who were very keen to show their muscles to each other. Instead, we chose to explore the weeds in the nearby arable fields. There, we came across species like Orobanche minor, Inula helenium, Peucedanum cervaria and Picris hieracioides. This brought an end to a highly successful day of plant hunting, as we had the joy of discovering almost 200 new species!

6 May 2016: Rakitovec - Lipnik - Kavčič (Google map)
About 10 years ago, Jeroen had the opportunity to visit the town of Rakitovec when he joined a summer camp organized by the Dutch Mammal Society. The area left a lasting impression as it was abundant in lime and characterized by a dominant Karst landscape. We parked our car just outside the town and followed a route recommended by the Koper tourist office. The locals affectionately call this 9-kilometer walk the "daffodil walk" due to... well... the daffodils! And there were many of them indeed. They were Nacissus radiiflorus (which some botanists consider a subspecies of Narcissus poeticus).

Paeonia officinalis The upper part of the village led us into the forest along a dirt track, where we encountered numerous meadows adorned with orchids. Abundantly present were Orchis purpurea, Neotinea tridentata, Anacamptis morio and Orchis mascula. In the forested areas, one of our all-time favorite plant species, Paeonia officinalis (see picture) caught our eye. The landscape was simply breathtaking, with small arable fields, diverse forests, and limestone rocks dotting the scenery. Chamaecytisus spinus occurred everywhere, from the town of Rakitovec all the way up to the summit of Mount Lipnik (804 meters above sea level) and Mount Kavčič (879 meters above sea level).

Once we reached the top of Mount Lipnik, we found ourselves practically above the tree line, where only a few solitary trees managed to survive the harsh climate. There, we encountered various plant species such as Erythronium dens-canis, Pulsatilla montana, Potentilla alba and a sizable Gentiana (probably Gentiana lutea). The Karst terrain resulted in numerous round pits in the ground, resembling meteorite craters. The less intense winds in these pits allowed for a somewhat different flora, so we discovered species like Iris spuria and Asphodelus albus, but also Lilium jankae, Orchis purpurea and Paeonia officinalis.

Fritilaria orientalis Atop Mount Kavčič, we found a spectacular new plant: Fritilaria orientalis (see picture)! On our way back to Rakitovec, we recorded Mercurialis ovata, which is intriguing since according to Marjorie Blamey's flora, its distribution does not include the former Yugoslavia. Nevertheless, we are confident in our identification of this plant. If you're interested, we'd be happy to share some pictures (contact us via our contact page).

6 May 2016: Portorož (Google map)

At this point, we had finally reached the Adriatic Sea coast. In the town of Portorož, we stumbled upon a pricey but pleasant campsite right next to a marina and a promenade along the shore. In the evening, we took a stroll along the promenade, but it didn't offer us many new plant species. It was only when we ventured beyond the developed area that we encountered some fascinating salt-tolerant plants, such as Limonium vulgare and Suaeda maritima. The views of the salinas, where sea water is transformed into salt, were truly spectacular!

The remote region served as a resting spot for both humans and animals. As we approached, we came across a boy and girl who seemed a bit embarrassed, because we caught them in a somewhat compromising position. They tried to downplay it, claiming they were "just chilling," but we had our suspicions that there was more to their story. Meanwhile, a group of Little Egrets had chosen the salinas as their sleeping place, and more birds continued to fly in throughout the evening. The following morning, we were treated to the sight of a group of Black-crowned Night Herons flying right above our heads.

7 May 2016: Strunjan Nature Reserve (Google map)

Near the town of Strunjan, there are several man-made small ponds used for salt extraction from sea water. These salt marshes not only serve their utilitarian purpose but also act as essential sanctuaries for numerous bird species. However, our primary interest lay in the plant life, particularly species adapted to salty environments. We discovered that many of the salt-tolerant plants we sought had already been recorded in the vicinity of Portorož. Nevertheless, we managed to add a few non-salty plant species to our list.

Lavatera arborea We started our walk on a path that turned out to be off-limits to non-rangers. Thankfully, a local official kindly informed us of the restriction and directed us back to the public path. Thus, we continued our walk alongside other visitors, making our way through the salines. On the north side, we walked around the adjacent lake as well. Some of the plant species we recorded, included Fumaria parviflora, Aster tripolium, Ruppia maritima, Spergularia salina, Oenanthe lachenalii and Lavatera arborea (see picture).

An intriguing discovery was a Fallopia species with remarkably large leaves. At first, we thought it might be an intermediate of Fallopia japonica and Fallopia albertii, known as Fallopia x conollyana. However, Dr. Peter Keil of the Biologische Station Westliches Ruhrgebiet asked us if we had any photo's of the plant. Filip Veloove of the Nationale Plantentuin in Meise (Belgium) then suggested that our finding could be Fallopia multiflora, a species originating from China. Although we did not collect any plant material, the Italian botanist Gabrielle Galasso confirmed his proposition. According to the Portal to the flora of Italy, this species is also known to occur in nearby Italy.

7 May 2016: Škocjanski Zatok Nature Reserve (Google map)

Find the frog Encouraged by the fruitful visit to the Strunjan salt marshes, we set our sights on the Škocjanski Zatok Nature Reserve. However, our botanical discoveries were rather limited in this location. Unfazed by the lack of new plant species, Rutger devised an entertaining puzzle for his kids, aptly named "find the frogs." See the picture and you will get the point. Please do not use our contact form to tell us where the frogs are. We already know.

7 May 2016: Fallow fields near Koper (Google map)

Lavatera arborea Venturing to the harbor of Koper city, we sought to add more elusive species to our list. Exploring some abandoned fields teeming with weeds, our efforts yielded moderate results, but we did manage to record some nice species, like Securigera securidaca, Colutea arborescens, Plantago coronopus and Ranunculus muricatus. As we stumbled upon Hedysarum coronarium (see picture) and Trigonella corniculata, a thunderstorm ominously approached. It was nothing short of a miracle that we managed to stay dry despite the impending downpour. Miracles do occur.

The charm of Koper was undeniable, with its abundance of old buildings and narrow streets. The town presented an intriguing blend of 18th-century Italian architecture and communist-era structures from Tito's Yugoslavia. During our time there, we recorded Chenopodium album and Sagina micropetala.

7 May 2016: Forest west of Lucija (Google map)

In search of Mediterranean forest species to complete our list, we parked our car near the police station of Lucija and embarked on a steep path leading into the forest. While this trail had several side-paths, we soon discovered that they all ended near private properties, making it impossible to create a pleasant round trip. Nonetheless, our journey wasn't in vain, as we were able to record some intriguing species along the way. Among our discoveries were Orchis purpurea, Genista germanica, Knautia drymeia, Rumex pulcher and Tanacetum macrophyllum.

8 May 2016: Robanov kot near Luče (Google map)
The Kamnik-Savinja Alps, much like the Triglav massif, boast an abundance of limestone and are undoubtedly worth exploring. North of the town of Luče lie three accessible valleys, and we decided at random to venture into the southernmost one, known as Robanov kot. Initially, we encountered familiar species that we had already recorded during the first two days of our Slovenian Botanical Journey. Polygala chamaebuxus, Pinguicula alpina and Polygala vulgaris were present throughout.

Paederota lutea There were several new species to add to our Slovenian list as well. In the lower part of the valley we found Clematis alpinus and Lonicera alpina. Along the path, we came across Acinos alpinus on the bare rocks. After we passed some guest houses, the path headed into the forest, leading us to a broad area with gravel and stones, the dry riverbed of a river. Following its course upstream, we stumbled upon a rock adorned with Paederota lutea (see picture). In the riverbed, some elevated 'islands' stood amidst the gravel. They were covered with large quantities of Dryas octopetala, occasionally interrupted by specimens of Gentiana clusii. We also recorded Ranunculus hybridus here.

Primula wulfeniana And then we found a primrose with strong, pointed leaves that had a little fringe on the edge. We immediately knew: this was Primula wulfeniana! Initially, we only encountered its leaves, but as we continued our ascent, we were delighted to find more flowering specimens of this striking plant. As we navigated through large boulders in the riverbed, we encountered several rocks fully covered in Primula wulfeniana (see picture) and Rhodothamnus chamaecistus. A few specimens of Primula auricula were present as well. This sure was a rewarding walk! As the day drew to a close, we retraced our steps downhill. On our way back, we came across Gentiana verna in a nice meadow.

9 May 2016: Kozjanski Nature Park: Bistrica gorge near Zagaj (Google map)
As we continued our journey eastwards, heading towards the Croatian border, we found ourselves in the vicinity of the Kozjanski Nature Park, where a small river forms the boundary between Slovenia and Croatia. However, what caught our attention upon arrival was the sight of immense quantities of barbed wire lining the river's shores. This marked the outer border of the Schengen zone, serving as a protective measure to control the influx of refugees seeking a better life after escaping war-torn regions. Well done EU...

In the Kozjanski area there were several gorges, each harboring a very rich plant life. We drove to the town of Zagaj and followed a narrow road into the Bistrica gorge. This valley was extremely rich in plant species typical of well-developed forests. Here, we encountered plants that we had not yet seen during our time in Slovenia. Notable discoveries included Isopyrum thalictroides, Scopolia carniolica, Staphylea pinnata and numerous specimens of Asplenium scolopendrium.

Centaurea montana Among the finds was an intriguing specimen of Centaurea montana that stood out due to its pinkish color instead of the typical blue hue (see picture). The forested valley also surprised us with species like Phyteuma spicta, which we had not come across until that moment. Our journey came to a halt as the road ended at the Bistrica River after a few kilometers. Thus, we retraced our path back to the town of Zagaj.

9 May 2016: Kozjanski Nature Park: Zelenjak gorge near Kunšperk (Google map)

After our visit to the Bistrica gorge, we proceeded to explore a second valley in Kozjanski called Zelenjak. Following a narrow road, we journeyed through the valley, though the scenery was not as awe-inspiring as the Bistrica gorge, the walk was enjoyable nonetheless. The forest here was much darker, with little sunlight reaching the forest floor. Still we were able to add some additional plant species to our list. They were Doronicum austriacum, Galium odoratum, Scopolia carniolica and Tanacetum corymbosum.

On our way back to the campsite, we decided to grab a hamburger at a local eatery. However, this dining experience turned out to be rather awkward due to the establishment's choice of decor. The walls were adorned with many pictures of scantily dressed women, some pictures leaving literally nothing to the imagination. This made eating a hamburger quite an unusual experience.

10 May 2016: Shore of the river Mur (Google map)

Old river Mur Exploring the river Mur, which partially serves as the border between Slovenia and Croatia, we encountered both "normalized" sections and numerous former river arms meandering through the landscape. Our journey began at the railway bridge over the Mur, south of Dokležovje, where a small arable field provided us with sightings of Anchusa officinalis, Ambrosia artemisiifolia, Epilobium tetragonum and Hypericum tetrapterum.

Following a path along the Mur's shore, we found ourselves amidst a forest mainly composed of Populus x canadensis, likely planted in the area. The soil consisted of river sand, enriched with nutrients, nurturing a thriving undergrowth that was nearly impenetrable. Acer negundo was abundant and seemed to be expanding its territory rapidly, as was Impatiens glandulifera. Amidst this lush environment, we also spotted Viola odorata, Potentilla indica and Carex riparia here.

As we continued our journey along the river Mur, we followed a path on an embankment that led us to a small remnant of the river, still containing water. Here, we spotted Persicaria hydropiper and Lemna minuta in the aquatic environment. A little further along we came across Oenanthe aquatica, Potamogeton trichoides and Spirodela polyrhiza in similar conditions. In the nearby agricultural fields, occasional appearances of Trifolium incarnatum reminded us of the crops that once grew there.

Our explorations of various locations in the surroundings of the river Mur revealed a repetition of more or less the same plant species. You can find the locations we visited on the Google map. However, as the day progressed, the continuous rain began to dampen our spirits, making it less and less pleasant to search for wild plants. Luckily, we had already set up our tent at a campsite near a wellness center. Upon returning, Jeroen wasted no time and jumped in the soothing thermal baths with water at a comfortable 38 degrees Celsius.

11 May 2016: Spodnja Velka (Google map)
Exploring the area northeast of Maribor, we came across several parallel ridges separated by valleys, creating a unique and amusing sight that we had observed on satellite images. Eager to witness this interesting topography in person, we headed to the region near Spodnja Velka, where we noticed a large number of Rhinanthus alectorolophus in the meadows. Following an unpaved path that led downhill into the adjacent woods, we found ourselves in a true paradise for plant enthusiasts. This area offered a delightful recapitulation of the species we had already encountered, as well as some exciting new additions.

Salamandra salamandraIn the meadows atop the hill, we discovered Knautia drymeia, Salvia pratensis, Helictotrichon pubescens, Vicia tetrasperma and Festuca pallens. Where the path ventured into the forest, we found Hieracium sabaudum, Trifolium medium and Lamium galeobdolon subsp. montanum. A nice sight was Fire salamander (see picture), of which we found two individuals crawling around in the moist humus layer.

Carex pendula Emerging from the forest at the bottom of the valley, we found ourselves in a meadow that was very rich in plant species. A small stream flowed through the meadow, partially meandering through a damp Alder forest. There were many different Carex species here, like Carex brizoides, Carex panicea, Carex vesicaria and Carex pendula (see picture). Among the other nice species we encountered were Potentilla rupestris, Thalictrum flavum and Symphytum bulbosum.

The true magic of the place lay in the serene atmosphere; there was not a single soul around. The tranquility was broken only by the melodic songs of several birds, including the delightful Oreolus oreolus. As we returned to our car, a local woman approached us, inquiring about our activities. When we explained that we were hunting for plant species, she seemed quite puzzled and asked, "warum?". We replied, "es macht spass", but she found it hard to believe and probably thought we were joking. In truth, we were not joking at all. We just were in a Slovenian plant paradise...

Unusually for us, we meticulously recorded all the plant species we found in this location, including those we had previously encountered during our Slovenian Botanical Journey. The comprehensive list amounted to an impressive 242 species, out of which 50 were new additions to our Slovenia-list. Not bad at all!

11 May 2016: The river Drau (Drava) at Šturmov potok (Google map)
The river Drau is located both in Slovenia and in Austria. We visited the Slovenian part and were especially interested in the adjacent streams that, coming from the surrounding hills, flew into the river. Our first stop was at Šturmov potok. A gravel bed had been formed where the Šturmov stream flowed into the Drau. We found Puccinellia distans, Spiraea japonica, Scrophularia umbrosa and Poa palustris here.

Verbascum nigrum After that, we followed the narrow road alongside the Šturmov potok up hill. Like the previous location, this was a true hit for recording plant species. In the grassy meadows we recorded Silene viscaria, Hypericum montanum and Anthyllis vulneraria subsp. carpatica. On rocky outcrops, we found Phyteuma betonicifolium and Verbascum nigrum (see picture). The sighting of Myosotis sparsiflora was special for us, as it was a plant neither of us had seen before. As we walked further up the road, we passed a couple of houses where locals were working in their vineyards. Two adorable little goats were munching on plants, but fortunately, they were restrained by a chain, limiting their "molestation radius." We recorded Asplenium scolopendrium and Matricaria chamomilla in this area before heading back down to the river.

Filled with enthusiasm from our successful findings, we decided to try our luck a little to the west, at Sv. Boštjan. We recorded Dianthus carthusianorum and Petrorhagia saxifraga here, and that concluded our Slovenian BotanicalJourney. It was a very successful one: the diverse habitats of Slovenia gifted us with a remarkable total of 944 different plant species. The comprehensive day-by-day list of our recordings reflects the richness and beauty of the Slovenian flora.

List of the recorded plant species

PLEASE NOTE:
Only the first finding of species is mentioned. This means that species recorded on multiple dates, such as both on the 6th and the 7th of May, are only noted on the 6th. An exception to this rule is our walk on May 11th at Spodnja Velka. There, we made a comprehensive list of all our findings, including the species that we already had recorded on one of the previous days.
