Plant recordings in April and May 2010

by Rutger Barendse and Jeroen Willemsen

Plant species of Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azur (France)

In the region "Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azur" (France) the Mediterranean climate meets the alpine climate of "Les Alpes Maritimes". The combination of those makes the area very rich in wild plants and offers a variety of rare and even endemic species. Especially interested in finding Tulipa saxatile we drove all the way to the south of France. We found snow, rain, heavy storms but also many wild flower species. In total we recorded over 800 different plants in two weeks time.

Report of this BotanicalJourney

26-4-2010: South of Vesoul (Franche comte) (Google Map)
We were not in a hurry so we decided to avoid the péage as much as we could. During our journey we had to stop several times to eat drink and - well, you know what. One of our stops just south of Vesoul in the French department Haute-Saône provided us with several species that are typical to the edges of forests. We decided to make a short list of the plants we discovered, such as Anemone nemorosa, Arum maculatum, Brachypodium sylvaticum, Campanula trachelium, Carex caryophyllea, Pimpinella major, Polygonatum multiflorum, Primula elatior, Pulmonaria montana and Ranunculus auricomus. The area was not very interesting for plant species. That is to say, at least the area within the first couple of meters around our car.

26-4-2010: Arc-et-Senans (Franche comte) (Google Map)

Ajuga reptans At the end of the day we wanted to find a camp site to spend the night. We were told there was a camp site in Arc-et-Senans (département du Doubs). Once we got there, the site seemed to be abandoned: it wasn't yet open for public. We put up our tents anyway and used the nice evening weather to wander through the surroundings of the site. As usual on our first day we were able to make a long list of species (in total 192 to be precise). The grass on the camp site had not been mown yet, so there were many wild flower species to be found: Ajuga reptans (see picture), Aphanes australis, Verbena officinalis, Erophila verna, Geranium dissectum, Sanguisorba minor and Lonicera xylosteum. We left the camp site and followed the road towards the river, where we found species like Arctium minus, Mentha longifolia and Salix purpurea. The road ended there so we went back a little, and followed the road to the right, which took us back to the river after a while. We continued our walk past an old castle or something, to find a very wet meadow on the right hand side of the road. Many tree frogs shouted at us but we were not able to actually see one. We did see many Carex species such as Carex acutiformis, Carex otrubae, Carex panicea and Carex tomentosa. Also we found Caltha palustris, Veronica catenata, Myriophyllum aquaticum and Equisetum fluviatile.

27-4-2010: Alongside river Rhône near Saint-Sorlin-en-Bugey (Rhône-Alpes) (Google Map)
The next morning we continued our journey towards the south of France. Because the river Rhône is a very special river we stopped at the banks near Saint-Sorlin-en-Bugey (Ain department). It was a nice place to stop and dry our tents in the sun, but the plant species were somewhat poor: Allium ursinum, Cruciata laevipes, Euphorbia amygdaloides, Euphorbia cyparissias and Lonicera xylosteum are some of the species we found.

27-4-2010: Near Eyguians (Google Map)

Ophrys sphegodes Further to the south we passed a limestone slope. We had stopped there several years ago (on our BotanicalJourney to Corsica) and we remembered lots of orchids from that time. Unfortunately most of the species were either not flowering yet or had already lost their flowers. Nevertheless we managed to find Alyssum alyssoides, Carex montana, Cerastium pumilum, Ophrys sphegodes (see picture), Potentilla tabernaemontani, Teucrium chamaedrys and Thlaspi perfoliatum.

27-4-2010: Surroundings of Castellane (Google Map)

Tulipa sylvestris Finally we arrived in Castellane. We put our luggage in a mobile home and immediately left the camp site to explore the surroundings. From that moment on we were "really" on the location we planned to go to, so we started writing down wild plant species all over again. We recorded 160 species that evening. Right in the surroundings of the camping "International" we found Muscari neglectum, Podospermum laciniatum, Verbena officinalis, Centaurea scabiosa, Onopordum acanthium, Reseda phyteuma and Alyssum alyssoides. We walked towards the town of Castellane. At the side of the road we found Calepina irregularis, Isatis tinctoria, Erodium moschatum, Lathyrus pratensis, Arabis turrita, Inula conyzae, Hippocrepis comosa, Carex digitata, Centaurea stoebe and Campanula medium. Much to our surprise we found lots of Tulipa sylvestris (see picture) on each side of the road. We didn't expect to find it on the first evening of our stay already !!! As you can imagine, we were very happy with this result.

28-4-2010: La Garde - Crête du Teillon (Google Map)
The first real day of our stay we decided to check out the surroundings of the town "La Garde". Just past the village a small footpath went up into the hills. There was still some snow when we were there. At the beginning of the dirt road our attention was drawn by large quantites of Narcissus poeticus, which was abundant in a wet environment. We also found Symphytum tuberosum, Pulmonaria stiriaca, Hepatica nobilis, Hypericum maculatum and Veronica beccabunga. The road led us to a small chapel: "La Chapelle Saint Martin". Here we found Arabis alpina, Lathyrus aphaca, Asplenium ceterach, Sempervivum tectorum and Asplenium fontanum.

Bulbocodium vernum The road went further up the hill. We crossed a rocky slope diagonally and finally managed to find the path again. Our side-trip brought us some new species like Ononis rotundifolia, Biscutella laevigata, Orobanche teucrii, Fritillaria involucrata, Laserpitium siler, Saxifraga paniculata, Androsace obtusifolia, Globularia cordifolia, Teucrium botrys and Pulsatilla alpina. As you can probably tell by these species names, we had reached a higher altitude by this time. The area was covered with the remnants of vast snow fields and we found several plants that indicated lower temperatures and moist environments, such as Gagea lutea, Trifolium alpestre, Bulbocodium vernum (see picture), Veronica praecox, Carex montana and Odontites luteus. We also found Aphyllanthes monspeliensis, which is endemic to the western Mediterranean region.

28-4-2010: From La Garde to Eoulx and La Rivière (Google Map)

Muscari neglectum When we were back in the town of La Garde there was plenty of time to go to another location as well. So we decided to continue down hill in the direction of Eoulx and further on to La Rivière. We found Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, Tetragonolobus maritimus, Viscum album subsp. abietis, Chaerophyllum hirsutum and Onopordum acaulon in this area. One meadow near La Rivière was very rich in Muscari neglectum (see picture), which was quite a funny sight.

29-4-2010: Seranon, near Chapelle Sainte Brigitte (Google Map)
Attracted by the spectacular sight of the steep slope near Seranon, we tried to get as close to the slope as we could. We followed a footpath towards the Chapelle Sainte Brigitte, but we did not notice many new plant species there. We saw Artemisia absinthium, Filago gallica and Petrorhagia prolifera and decided to go elsewhere.

29-4-2010: Near Les Amphons (Google Map)
We drove on towards the south and near Les Amphons we decided to stop and check a smal limestone slope next to the D6085. This slope provided us with Herniaria glabra, Euphorbia characias, Tragopogon hybridus, Aethionema saxatile, Bituminaria bituminosa, Hesperis laciniata, Antirrhinum siculum and Muscari comosum.

29-4-2010: Surroundings of Saint-Vallier-de-Thiey (Google Map)

Erodium rodiei On our way to Corsica in 2005 we stopped at a parking area just after the Passe de la Faye, near Saint-Vallier-de-Thiey. We discovered Erodium rodiei there, a rare endemic known only from the surroundings of Nice. Because we passed that same location again, we decided to stop there once more. And indeed Erodium rodiei was still there (see picture). We also found Iris attica, Asterolinon linum-stellatum, Barlia robertiana, Euphorbia exigua, Koeleria macrantha, Linaria supina, Orchis morio ssp picta, Ornithogalum collinum, Valeriana tuberosa and Viola kitaibeliana.

29-4-2010: Saint-Vallier-de-Thiey (Google Map)

Orchis morio ssp picta Driving through the town of Saint-Vallier-de-Thiey we noticed a meadow where once a house had been, but which was now covered with all kinds of orchids. For example: Orchis morio (both purple and white specimens, as you can see on the picture), Barlia robertiana, but also Parentucellia latifolia, Medicago arabica, Trifolium stellatum, Erodium ciconium and Trifolium nigrescens.

29-4-2010: North of Grasse (parking area) (Google Map)
The town of Grasse is quite an obstacle if you are looking for wild plant species and don't really want to be in a car. So before we entered the town we decided to stop once more. We checked a dry hill just north of Grasse and discovered Pistacia lentiscus, Dorycnium pentaphyllum, Asphodelus ramosus, Spartium junceum, Ficus carica, Lonicera etrusca, Calicotome villosa, Salvia verbenacea, Ophrys sphegodes and Genista hispanica. As you can see the Mediterranean climate is clearly shown by the type of vegetation.

29-4-2010: Croisette (Cannes) - Parking of Balitrand (Google Map)
We finally reached our goal of the day - the Mediterranean coast. We parked our car on a location where you would not expect many new species perhaps: the parking area of Balitrand in Croisette (Cannes). The grassy pieces of land that are owned by nobody revealed 34 new plant species to us, such as Campanula erinus, Carex hirta, Convolvulus althaeoides, Ferula communis, Fumaria capreolata, Galactites tomentosa, Lavatera cretica and Silene gallica. Also the river (which is severely canalized there!) offered us some new species, like Alisma plantago-aquatica, Apium nodiflorum, Veronica anagallis-aquatica, Rumex obtusifolius and Iris pseudacorus.

29-4-2010: Alongside D9 near Pégomas (Google Map)

Aristolochia rotunda The day had almost come to an end so we drove back north to go to Castellane again. Near Pégomas we stopped at some sort of circus tent and we followed a dirt road that lead through fallow fields and deserted properties. This proved to be a good choice, because we found 47 new species in this area. Some of the plants we found were Equisetum ramosissimum, Aristolochia rotunda (see picture), Equisetum telmateia, Thalictrum lucidum, Potamogeton alpinus, Potamogeton crispus, Myriophyllum spicatum, Inula crithmoides, Equisetum hyemale, Vicia bithynica and Aristolochia clematitis.

30-04-2010: North of l'Iscle (Google Map)

Cerinthe glabra After a successful day in the Mediterranean climate we decided to go up north this day to find plant species of more moderate climate zones. North of the town of l'Iscle our attention was drawn by several specimens of Cerinthe minor (see picture) on the side of the road. We stopped and started looking for more plant species. At the edge of a field we discovered Androsace maxima, a plant of only several inches high (anyone got an idea why this plant is called A. maxima ??). We also found Ajuga genevensis, Biscutella cichoriifolia and Laburnum alpinum. This was a good place to look for plants.

30-04-2010: Pont Saint Joseph / Clue de Rouaine (Google Map)
Just past the "pont Saint Joseph" we saw a narrow and very steep road on the right. The area was very rich in all kinds of butterflies and we also found Aster bellidiastrum, Cytisus sessilifolius, Hieracium amplexicaule and Saponaria ocymoides.

30-4-2010: Railway station Agnère (Google Map)

Orchis purpurea The railway station called "Agnère" doesn't really look if there ever stops a train. It proved to be a very spectacular plant hunting site nevertheless. At first we wandered around a bit in the surroundings of the railway but soon we started to follow the banks of the river. A rich variety of plant species could be found there. In the no man's land between the railroad and the river, we discovered several extremely dry and sunny habitats. Some of the spectacular species we found, are: Alcea rosea, Artemisia verlotiorum, Linaria simplex, Astragalus monspessulanus, Iris albicans, Ononis minutissima, Anthyllis vulneraria subsp. pyrenaica, Ajuga genevensis, Helianthemum appeninum, Tulipa sylvestris and Orchis purpurea (see picture).

30-04-2010: Gorges du Cians (Google Map)

Fritillaria involucrata The climate in the Gorges du Cians was quite the opposite of the warm, sunny habitats near Agnère. In fact it was dark and moist in that gorge. This resulted in a totally different species list. Salvia glutinosa, Fritillaria involucrata (see picture), Adiantum capillus-veneris, Ophrys sphegodes, Ligusticum lucidum and Cephalanthera longifolia are some of the species we found here.

30-04-2010: Saint Joseph (Google Map)

Medicago orbicularis Our day ended on a slope near the river Var. This was not a coincidence, but a complete misunderstanding. We had read somewhere that there are many interesting plant species in the coastal area of the Var. We assumed that the river Var was meant by this description, but it appeared to be a boring, canalized stream. We later found out that not the river Var was the place to be, but the coastal areas of the département du Var. Anyway, at this time of our Botanical Journey we were still ignorant about that fact, so we tried our luck on this slope near the river Var. A narrow road led us past several houses and through a forest. A friendly man gave us permission to take pictures of a Gladiolus italicus that he claimed to be his property. More interesting however were species such as Celtis australis, Medicago orbicularis (see picture), Coronilla scorpioides, Oxalis latifolia, Theligonum cynocrambe, Euphorbia brittingeri, Ampelodesmos mauritanica, Urospermum dalechampii, Reichardia picroides, Crepis pulchra, Pallenis spinosa and Euphorbia taurinensis. As you probably know from reports of other Botanical Journeys, we have some sort of Holy Grail. This is to find Limodorum abortivum with flowers. But somehow all the plants we have found up till now do not have flowers yet. This was also the case at Saint Joseph.

1-5-2010: Near Soleils (Google Map)

Narcissus poeticus On the first day of May we wanted to go to the Mediterranean coast again. So we were driving south, when suddenly our attention was drawn to several specimens of Narcissus poeticus subsp. radiiflorus (see picture) a little north of the village of Soleils (map 1). So we stopped there for a moment to have a look around. We also found Dactylorhiza viridis, Geum montanum and Fritilaria involucrata. A little south of Soleils (map 2) we stopped again and found Campanula scheuchzeri, Fritillaria involucrata, Matthiola fruticulosa and Polygonatum odoratum.

1-5-2010: Le Couloubrier (north of Sainte Maxime) (Google Map)

Echium plantagineaum We stopped again on a location near the D25 further to the south. On the left side of the road there was a grassy field with lots of wild flowers in various colors. The place was crowded with a million specimens of the grasshopper Barbitistes fischeri. It is said that this animal can be a severe threat to crops. When we were there the animals had just started to demolish the vegetation. Nevertheless, we found many new plant species here, like Linum bienne, Melica minuta, Echium creticum (see picture), Centranthus calcitrapae, Selaginella selaginoides, Anogramma leptophylla, crophularia peregrina, Lathyrus tingitanus, Linaria pelisseriana, Coleostephus myconis, Arisarum vulgare and Neotinea maculata.

1-5-2010: Surroudings of Ramatuelle / Pampelonne (Google Map)

Serapias cordigera The coast near Pampelonne is almost inaccessible. There are many very large houses and holiday resorts with private beaches. Therefore it was almost impossible for us to reach the shore. At some point, opposite to a tattoo shop, there was a narrow road that led to the sea, but we didn't find any noticeable species there. A little further we parked our car under some pine trees and started to climb a hill in the direction opposite to the sea. This proved to be a good choice.
Limodorum abortivum First we walked through a Maquis-like environment, where we found Ruscus aculeatus, Galium divaricatum, Centaurium maritimum, Cytinus hypocistis, Juncus capitatus, Sagina subulata, Arisarum vulgare and Neotinea maculata. Higher up the hill the vegetation became less shrubby and more grassy. There we found Plantago coronopus, Juncus bufonius, Lagurus ovatus and Plantago cretica. We took our time to carefully look at some Serapias species. They are a bit difficult to identify, but the book by Delforge proved to be a helpful instrument. With a little patience it was not too difficult after all to identify three different Serapias species: Serapias cordigera, Serapias lingua (see picture above) and Serapias vomeracea. The environment was quite rich in Orchis laxiflora as well. Down the hill we set down to eat a sandwich near the entrance of a hotel. And suddenly we noticed… LIMODORUM ABORTIVUM with lots of flowers (see picture). So finally we were lucky and found our Holy Grail.

1-5-2010: l'Escalet (Google Map)
Determined to reach the coast we drove on. Near l'Escalet the coastal area became less crowded and richer in plants on accessible locations. We walked along the beach and later across the rocks and found species like Bellis annua, Medicago arborea, Pancratium maritimum, Glaucium flavum, Romulea bulbocodium, Valantia hispida, Trifolium glomeratum, Myoporum tetrandrum, Parapholis incurva, Senecio leucanthemifolius and Phagnalon rupestre.

2-5-2010: Le Mont Vinaigrier (Nice) (Google Map)

Linum grandiflorum If you're not familiar with the city it is quite an exciting experience to go through Nice by car. Surprisingly we managed to reach the Mont Vinaigrier, near the Observatorium. We were told that this was one of the few locations where Leucojum nicaeense could be found (among other interesting species). Our journey started on the parking area of the upper part of the Mont, where the area was quite crowded. Large footpaths indicated a lot of Nice people being here in the weekend and in the evening. The area was mostly covered with trees, but there were also several grassy fields (for recreative purposes?).

Leucojum nicaeense We first found Lathyrus latifolius, Anemone hortensis, Rhagadiolus stellatus, Linum grandiflorum (see picture above), Aegilops geniculata, Centaurea nicaeensis, Rhamnus alaternus and Tragopogon porrifolius. And finally, just after we gave up the hope of finding new species, there it was: Leucojum nicaeense (see picture).

2-5-2010: Rocky slope Saint Michel near Beaulieu-sur-Mer (Google Map)
A little further in the direction of Monaco we stopped near a slope with a long stairway on it, leading to Saint Michel. We decided to climb the hill (first down, later up) and found several species of rocky environments, like Centaurea leucophaea, Convolvulus cantabrica, Vicia peregrina, Anthyllis tetraphylla, Clypeola jonthlaspi, Campanula erinus, Minuartia mediterranea, Sideritis romana, Teucrium fruticans and Coris monspeliensis.

2-5-2010: Eze-bord-de-Mer (Google Map)

Jasminus fruticans At the start of the day we looked on Google Earth and noticed a lime stone slope near Eze-bord-de-Mer. The road was called "chemin Fridrich Nietzsche". We managed to find that road and climbed all the way up. At first the road was quite boring because of a large fence and a large wall on either sides of the path. But higher up the hill the surroundings became less occupied. There was a dry and hot climate in which we found Blackstonia perfoliata, Erigeron karvinskianus, Erysimum nevadense, Ononis minutissima, Jasminus fruticans (see picture), Pteris vittata and Sonchus tenerrimus. At the top of the path we accidentally entered a private poperty. The owners were very kind to show us the right direction and we managed to spot Barlia robertiana on their lawn.

2-5-2010: Cap Martin (Google Map)

Anthyllis barba-jovis On the cap Martin there was a narrow path that crossed the rocky cliffs. The path was called "Sentier des Douaniers". We followed it for a while and discovered Anthyllis barba-jovis (see picture), Lathyrus annuus, Ptilostemon gnaphaloides, Echium candicans, Myrtus communis, Ruscus hypophyllum, Aptenia cordifolia, Stachys ocymastrum and Tolpis barbata.

3-5-2010: Gorges du Verdon: Pont de Carajuan (Google Map)

Moehringia intermedia The Gorges du Verdon are very famous for their endemic plants. So of course we had to pay a visit to this special place. First we went to the Pont de Carajuan. We climbed down to the bottom of the Gorge and very soon found our first endemic plant of the day: Asplenium jahandiezii. We also found Globularia repens, Hieracium murorum, Phyteuma villarsii, Prunus mahaleb and Teucrium polium. The second endemic plant was a little up the slope from the parking area: Moehringia intermedia (see picture).

3-5-2010: Gorges du Verdon: Point Sublime (Google Map)

Globularia repens The second stop in the area of the Gorges du Verdon was near Point Sublime. The landscape was quite remarkable there, with barren rocks as well as grassy slopes. We found many Orchis purpurea, Salvia verbanacea, Isatis tinctoria, Silene otites, Mentha longifolia, Iberis saxatilis, Globularia cordifolia (see picture), Serratula nudicaulis and Scorzonera austriaca. From this moment on it started to rain. In fact, it didn't stop raining for a very, very long time. To be precise the rain kept pouring down for days and days. Only when we were on our way back in the surroundings of Liège (so that means we were almost home), the rain finally stopped. By that time snow was falling down on the Côte d'Azur).

3-5-2010: La Palud sur Verdon (Google Map)
We stopped near La Palud sur Verdon in the pouring rain. We only recorded Potentilla cinerea here. On our way back we picked up 2 Belgian hitchhikers. They had planned a several days walk in de Gorges du Verdon but they were soaked by the rain and were desperate to find a hotel.

3-5-2010: From Castellane to the surroundings of La Palud (Google Map)
In the evening we decided to take a short tour in the area near our camp site in Castellane. It was a very wet walk, but we managed to record some new species. First we walked to the town of La Palud and then we followed a dirt road back to Castellane through the forest. In Castellane we walked back through the meadows that we already knew from the Tulipa sylvestris. We recorded Barbarea vulgaris, Carex otrubae, Lepidium heterophyllum, Marrubium vulgare, Medicago lupulina, Salvia aethiopis and Veronica serpyllifolia.

4-5-2010: Golfe de Fréjus (Google Map)
We hoped that there would be less rain on the Mediterranean coast, so we drove south once again. Unfortunately the rain must have had the same thoughts, because it still came down in huge quantities. Near a canal at the Golfe de Fréjus we put on our raincoats and looked around for new plant species. Apparently the water level was quite stable because a lot of plant species managed to grow on the concrete shore of the canal. We recorded Anthemis cotula, Bellardia trixago, Orobanche minor, Populus alba, Solanum luteum and Vicia villosa here.

4-5-2010: Étangs de Villepey (Fréjus) (Google Map)

Medicago marina A little bit further down the road there was a large parking area. We parked our car there and walked back to the canal, following the coastline. There were small dunes and a sheltered area just behind them. This proved to be a nice place to discover plants, such as Medicago marina (see picture), Tamarix africana, Cutandia maritima, Xanthium orientale, Carex extensa, Aster tripolium, Malva arborea, Aristolochia clematitis, Rumex bucephalophorus, Trifolium resupinatum, Sagina maritima and Euphorbia villosa.

4-5-2010: Saint Aygulf (Google Map)
In the town of Saint Aygulf we visited the beach again, to find only Glebionis segetum. A place to forget soon, although the waves of the Mediterranean Sea were quite impressive.

4-5-2010: Cap Estérel (Google Map)
On the Cap Estérel we walked through a forested area in which we found species like Carex olbiensis, Draba muralis, Luzula pilosa, Neotinea maculata and Senecio lividus.

4-5-2010: Northwest of Agay (Google Map)

Ophrys sphegodes By the end of the day we were a bit lost. Later we found that we had stopped somewhere west of Agay. Large numbers of Anthericum liliago and Simethis mattiazzii had drawn our attention. The area (on both sides of the road) appeared to be somewhat messy, but the wild flower species we found there were spectacular! For example there were many different orchid species: Serapias neglecta, Serapias olbia, Orchis morio, Neotinea tridentata, Ophrys sphegodes (see picture) and Anacamptis morio subsp. champagneuxii. Other plant species we found here, were Mentha pulegium, Tulipa sylvestris, Stachys officinalis, Ophioglossum lusitanicum, Isoetes duriei and Ranunculus monspeliacus.

4-5-2010: Alongside the D563 south of Mons (Google Map)
On our way back to Castellane we saw Cephalanthera longifolia on the side of the road. We stopped for a while and also recorded Barlia robertiana, Neotinea tridentata, Ophrys scolopax and Tetragonolobus maritimus.

5-5-2010: Les vieux salines - Hyères (Google Map)

Serapias parviflora When we stood in the rain near Fréjus someone told us that we really should go to "Les vieux salines" near Hyères. And so we did (it was still raining so why not drive endlessly around in your car). Indeed it was really spectacular. The "vieux salines" are former salt lakes. Nowadays they are protected by European laws as Natura 2000 area. When we arrived there, the gate was closed in front of us by a nice French lady, who just said: "je suis désolé". She reminded me of Madonna. Apparently European nature has a lunch break every day from 12 to 2. But fortunately the gate was easy to walk around so we could enter the reserve without anyone bothering us. After all it was lunch time! We started to identify some Serapias species, again with the indispensable help of the book by Delforge. We identified Serapias parviflora (see picture), Serapias neglecta and Serapias cordigera and we also found Lathyrus ochrus, Sarcocornia perennis, Borago officinalis, Onobrychis caput-galli, Parentucellia viscosa, Anemone pavonina, Inula crithmoides, Elaeagnus multiflora and Elaeagnus angustifolia. When we visited the visitor centre we noticed a couple of giant specimens of Scilla hyacinthoides alongside the path. In the visitor centre we noticed a very nice book, that we can recommend to everybody: Le var et sa flore, written by R. Cruon. Unfortunately the book is rather expensive.

5-5-2010: La Capte (Hyères) - beach near camping "Eurosurf" (Google Map)
Inspired by the book of the rare plants of the département du Var, we decided to try our luck on the beach near camping "Eurosurf" at La Capte. We found several species that are well known from the sea side, like Otanthus maritimus, Crucianella maritima, Anthemis maritima, Convolvulus soldanella, Pseudorlaya pumila, Matthiola tricuspidata and Hypochaeris cretensis.

5-5-2010: Etangs des Pesquiers (Hyères) (Google Map)
Other old salt lakes are at Etangs des Pesquiers, also near Hyères. We didn't have enough time to check out this area properly for wild plant species, but we did notice Convolvulus soldanella there.

5-5-2010: Comps sur Artruby (Google Map)
On our way back we found Holosteum umbellatum near Comps sur Artruby.

This was the last plant we recorded. In total we recorded 798 different plant species in the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azur. If we also count the plant species we recorded in Franche-Comte and Rhône-Alpes we can say that this Botanical Journey resulted in 907 different plant species. The species lists for each location is displayed below.

List of the recorded plant species

PLEASE NOTE: Only the first finding of species is displayed. So species that were both recorded on the 26th and the 27th of October ONLY are noted on the 26th.
